The Dunedin Test during India’s tour of New Zealand in 1998-99 is part of history for a reason that the lovers of red-ball cricket don’t like to see happening on a cricket field.
It was the first Test of the series in Carisbrook, Dunedin, as the Indian team led by Mohammad Azharuddin was ready to take on Stephen Fleming’s New Zealand, but the players could never leave the dressing room to play cricket.
Rain and wet conditions washed out the entire five days of play and the match was called off without a ball being bowled. The toss, too, didn’t happen.
Similar scenes unfolded at the Greater Noida Sports Complex Ground on the outskirts of Delhi, where rain and resultant wet conditions didn’t allow even the toss to happen in the one-off Test between Afghanistan and Bangladesh, leading to abandonment of the match.
The Greater Noida stadium has been Afghanistan’s adopted home for the past few years to host their ‘home’ series.
It was the eighth Test in history that didn’t see even a single ball being bowled, and the first in 26 years since the India vs New Zealand game in December 1998. Here’s the complete list:
