More for more: On the Union Budget and allocations

Budgets of the Union or the States, as much as they are revenue and expenditure statements for the upcoming fiscal year, are also an exercise in political economy, and the recently tabled Union Budget for 2024-25 is no different. Aside from the “nine priorities”, beginning with provisions for the farm sector and attempts to boost employment, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman delved at some length on the special provisions made for the States of Andhra Pradesh and Bihar. Both are headed by parties providing crucial support to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after its underwhelming performance in the 2024 general election. The Janata Dal (United) headed by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and the Telugu Desam Party headed by his Andhra Pradesh counterpart N. Chandrababu Naidu a...

Biren Singh said on Friday. He added he has “full confidence” that the Centre understands the issues in Manipur. This comes on a day when the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), one of the most influential civil society organisations (CSOs) in the Imphal valley, took out a mass rally where thousands of people, including several Meira Paibi groups, protested against the Central government’s handling of the conflict, accused it of being involved in the “extermination of indigenous peoples of Manipur”, and raised slogan...

Om Birla beats Oppn’s K Suresh in rare election for LS Speaker, suspense remains over Dy Speaker post

New Delhi: NDA nominee Om Birla was re-elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha by voice vote Wednesday. He defeated the Congress’s Kodikunnil Suresh, fielded as the Opposition’s candidate, in what was the fourth instance of an election for the post since Independence. The motion to appoint Birla, moved by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was adopted through voice vote with the Opposition not pressing for division of votes, but making it a point to register their dissent over the government’s non-committal approach to their demand for the deputy Speaker’s post. The rare event of an election for the Speaker’s post was necessitated due to a lack of agreement between the treasury and the opposition benches, which insisted that there could be a consensus only if the government was ready to give the de...

The vagaries of equidistance in a polarised polity: Data

Voters wait in queues to cast their vote for the Lok Sabha polls. | Photo Credit: ANI Regional parties have been a significant presence in Indian polity for over three decades now. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, they could be classified into three types — one, parties that allied with the Bharatiya Janata Party in the National Democratic Alliance; two, parties that were part of the INDIA bloc and a distinctive third category. This category includes parties that were technically not part of the NDA, and had, in the recent past, endorsed controversial legislations introduced by the BJP or adopted ideological positions closer to that of the BJP.The first category includes parties such as the Shiv Sena (led by Eknath Shinde), Janata Dal (United), Telugu Desam Party, Janata Dal (Secular),...

TDP, which had opposed EVMs after 2019 defeat, hits out at Jagan for backing Oppn’s paper ballot push

Hyderabad: Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy has joined the growing chorus of voices calling for a reversion to voting via ballot papers in elections, raising concerns over the risks of using Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).Jagan’s latest take on EVMs is in total contrast to that of the Bharatiya Janata Party, with which he had maintained a friendly equation during the last five years.   The BJP — leader of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is a member of — has been strongly backing the use of electronic machines. But the Opposition, led by the Congress, wants to either do away with EVMs or have 100 percent VVPAT (Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail) verification. Show Full Article Two week...

Did religion affect NE results? Hindutva, Manipur among reasons for NDA losses, say community leaders

Political analysts and civil society members told ThePrint that Sarma’s comment is more like throwing a dice in the dark to see if it creates any desirable effects.  Bishop Purely Lyngdoh, the president of the Shillong All Faith Forum in Meghalaya, where the Voice of the People Party (VPP) and the Congress won one seat each, said that Sarma’s comment must have been “out of excitement, or rather disappointment”.“Hopefully, he (Sarma) doesn’t mean what he said. Because all religions have existed in the Northeast for a long time, and we have lived together. From the forum, we have never appealed to anyone to choose a party or candidate, but we do tell people to use their conscience before casting their vote,” he said.Former president and current adviser to Arunachal Christian Forum Toko Te...

People at the centre: On the Election results 2024

People are, and should be, at the centre of a democracy. The outcome of the 18th general election is an unambiguous reiteration by the people of that tenet. As the verdict unfolded on June 4, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) fell short of an absolute majority in the Lok Sabha, which is a far cry from its claims made during the campaign. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA), which the BJP leads, has, however, won a majority, getting more than 290 seats. The BJP’s individual tally is 240, which is 63 fewer than its 2019 strength of 303. Two NDA partners, the JD(U) in Bihar and the TDP in Andhra Pradesh, which have won 12 and 16 Lok Sabha seats, respectively, will hold significant sway in the Lok Sabha, as will other regional parties in general. The verdict of the people cannot be cleare...

Modi set for third term with help of allies, strong INDIA performance mars his moment in history

New Delhi: Marking a dramatic shift in the country’s politics, the BJP has lost its majority in the Lok Sabha, with the Opposition’s INDIA bloc putting up a formidable show and forcing Narendra Modi to seek the help of coalition partners TDP and JD(U) to secure a third straight term in office. The people’s mandate dealt a shock to the BJP, which, under Modi’s leadership, had set an ambitious target of winning 400 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha by repeating its domination of the heartland states, while also expanding footprint in the country’s eastern and southern coast. But, that was not to be on Tuesday. In a near repeat of 2004, nearly all the exit polls failed to predict the reverses that were headed the BJP’s way, and the surge in the Opposition’s numbers. INDIA bloc pulling Modi-led BJP below halfway mark, setting country on course for coalition govt

New Delhi: It was an experiment that was set in motion last June, in a hot and humid Patna, with Bihar Chief Minister and Janata Dal (United) supremo Nitish Kumar playing the gracious host.Leaders of 17 opposition parties had huddled at the residence of Kumar, initiating the process of forming the pre-poll Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), essentially a rebranded United Progressive Alliance (UPA) that had practically ceased to exist after the decimation of the Congress in the 2014 general elections. The objective, as spelt out in the press conference after the inaugural meeting, was to come together in “national interest”, and defeat the Bharatiya Janata Party by sharing seats to prevent the split of opposition’s vote banks.
