Farakka Water Sharing Talks Without Informing Bengal: Mamata Banerjee

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday said the state was in the dark even as there were talks of renewal of the Farakka water sharing treaty with Bangladesh, despite West Bengal being a key stakeholder as the river passes through it to the neighbouring country. She raised apprehensions about potential water sharing from Teesta River with Bangladesh, questioning whether the waterbody has sufficient water throughout the year for such initiatives. "Without informing us, it is being said that the Farakka (water sharing) treaty will be renewed," she said, maintaining that apart from Bengal, Bihar will also be affected. "Though we are the main party, we were not informed when our PM held talks with his Bangladeshi counterpart," she told a press conference at the state secretariat ...

Political Turmoil, Airport Strikes: France’s Challenges Ahead Of Paris Olympics 2024

France was plunged into political turmoil on Monday three weeks before hosting the Olympics, while a call for strikes at Paris airports added fresh uncertainty to the already tense build up. The run-up to the world's biggest sporting event is usually fraught for host nations, but French President Emmanuel Macron added unexpected complexity last month by calling snap parliamentary elections. A second round of voting for the National Assembly on Sunday delivered a hung parliament, making it hard to know who will be in key government positions when the Games open on July 26. "Our country is facing an unprecedented political situation and is getting ready to host the world in a few weeks," Prime Minister Gabriel Attal stressed on Sunday evening as he offered his resignation. Macron has asked t...

Employment Growth Rate In India Was 6% Last Year, Says RBI

The Reserve Bank Of India said on Monday that India added 46.7 million jobs in the fiscal year ended March, far exceeding numbers in private surveys that point to high unemployment rates. The employment growth rate was 6% in 2023/24 versus 3.2% in 2022/23, the RBI data on measuring industry level productivity and employment showed. Analysts linked the lack of jobs and high inflation with PM Modi's failure in polls last month to win a majority in the directly elected house of the parliament, meaning he had to rely on allies to return to power for a third term. India's total employment stood at 643.3 million in 2023/24 versus 596.7 million in FY23, RBI data showed. The central bank uses data from the government's National Accounts and Ministry of Labour to extrapolate the country's productiv...

“If You Don’t Participate In Debate…”: Veep Counsels P Chidambaram

This is for the second time since Saturday that Mr Dhankhar has targeted P Chidambaram over his remarks on the three criminal justice laws -- the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita, and the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam -- which came into force on July 1. Addressing a group of Rajya Sabha interns here, Mr Dhankhar, without naming Mr Chidambaram, said, "He said nothing in the House (Rajya Sabha). He was a member of the committee (department-related standing committee on Home)". If a member is part of the committee,...
