While the re-exam was conducted on Sunday with only 52% attendance, the paper leak scandal continues to escalate, with 110 candidates barred from the exam for ‘malpractice’.
Amid the controversy surrounding the NEET-UG and UGC-NET exams (cancelled a day after being held), the central government on Sunday ordered a CBI investigation into the alleged irregularities in the NEET 2024 exam. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a criminal case on Sunday and formed special teams to investigate the matter. According to the agency’s FIR, there were ‘isolated incidents’ in a few states during the NEET (UG) 2024 exam conducted on May 5, 2024.
In the meantime, opposition leaders have intensified their criticism of the central government regarding the alleged paper leak in NEET 2024.
According to ANI, DMK’s TKS Elangovan said on Sunday that his party wanted the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test to be abolished, adding that the entrance examination favours the rich and is riddled with ‘fraud’. ANI has quoted him saying, “We want the NEET exam to be abolished. Whoever gets good marks in school, should be given admission to professional colleges. Why is there any need for NEET? If there is a NEET, then there is fraud.” “Only rich people can join some institutes and get trained. However, poor people who get good marks in school may not be able to get admission to medical colleges,” he added.
Also, news agency PTI reports that West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has written to PM Modi, urging him to consider abolishing NEET and restore the system of conducting the exam by states following the paper leak row.
In her letter to the PM, Banerjee also called for strong action against those involved in the alleged irregularities in the NEET-UG exam, reports PTI. “I strongly urge upon you to consider and take immediate steps to restore the previous system of conducting this examination by the state governments and abolish the NEET examination. This will help restore normalcy and confidence of the aspirant students in the system,” she said.
