As 2 ministers resign, Stalin applies poll arithmetic in Tamil Nadu cabinet reshuffle ahead of 2026

Chennai: With Tamil Nadu headed for assembly elections next year, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has rejigged his cabinet, keeping political considerations in mind. Following the resignation of K. Ponmudi and V. Senthil Balaji as ministers Sunday, Stalin Monday reinducted former minister Mano Thangaraj from the Christian Nadar community, increasing the count of Nadars in the cabinet to four. Thangaraj is the ruling party’s MLA from Padmanabhapuram and, according to government sources, is likely to be given the milk and dairy development ministry that he held between 2023 and 2024. The Nadar community is dominant in the southern districts, a region where the ruling DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) and Opposition AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) are fighting to widen their suppor...

At TVK general body meet, Vijay calls DMK ‘fascist’ and issues a word of caution to PM Modi

Chennai: Actor-turned politician Vijay launched a blistering attack on Tamil Nadu’s ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) Friday, calling it a “fascist” party and comparing it with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), at his party’s first general body meeting held near Mahabalipuram on the outskirts of Chennai. “You keep saying that the BJP is a fascist party. But you are also equally fascist as them,” he said at the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) meeting, which also marked the party’s first anniversary and start of its second year. The TVK leader declared that the 2026 Tamil Nadu assembly elections would be a fight between only two parties. “One is DMK and the other one is TVK,” he said. Vijay took aim at Chief Minister M.K. Stalin with a dig at what he called the DMK’s dynasty politics, sa...

TN waging a language war, but data tells a different story—enrolment in Tamil-medium schools falling

Chennai: Even as the Tamil Nadu government fights what it calls the “imposition” of Hindi through the three-language formula, the number of student enrolments in Tamil-medium schools in the state has declined sharply, while those in English-medium government schools have surged. According to data presented by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan in the Rajya Sabha last week, the number of students enrolled in Tamil-medium schools in Tamil Nadu fell from 65.87 lakh in 2018-19 to 46.82 lakh in 2023-24. Meanwhile, English-medium enrolments in government and government-aided schools increased from 55.18 lakh in 2018-19 to 82 lakh in 2023-24. Amid a heated war of words between Tamil Nadu and the Centre over the state’s current two-language policy, Pradhan said—arguing for the New Educati...

Language row spills into Andhra Pradesh as BJP ally Kalyan, DMK’s Kanimozhi trade barbs

Hyderabad: Jana Sena Party (JSP) chief and Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan has jumped into the language row raging between the Centre and Tamil Nadu government, denouncing the stand of Dravidian parties on Hindi. On Friday, in a statement seen as supporting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Narendra Modi government’s position, Kalyan questioned why Tamil films were being dubbed into Hindi despite resistance to imposition of the language in Tamil Nadu. The JSP and BJP are partners in the Telugu Desam Party-led NDA government in Andhra Pradesh. If Hindi is unwelcome then, “you shouldn’t dub Tamil movies into Hindi” and release them in north India, said the actor-turned-politician. “They abuse Sanskrit, charge Hindi imposition. These too are our nation’s languages, right?...

Chennai: Ahead of the 2026 assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader M.K. Stalin is intensifying his campaign against the proposed delimitation exercise, rallying all 40 registered political parties in the state to forge a united stand under his leadership.
