Five-time World Chess champion Magnus Carlsen has been on a spate of podcasts lately and after appearing in the Joe Rogan Experience, he was part of the BotezLive channel where he spoke about his recent marriage.
The past few months have been eventful for Carlsen. He has been in a feud with FIDE, the chess world body. He won the World Rapid Chess Champion, but not without a chunk of controversy involving a pair of jeans and a violation of the tournament dress code. It was an incident that saw him fined and disqualified for a round, which led to Carlsen temporarily quitting the tournament in New York but then returning to win joint gold with Ian Nepomniachtchi.
On the BotezLive Youtube channel, Carlsen was asked whether there was any impact on his chess after he got married.
The Norwegian started out by jokingly saying, “I should be very careful about what I say right now.” He then said, “I’ve generally played quite well and had fun playing chess since we got together. I’ve won 100% of my classical tournaments – granted I’ve only played one. She’s a great support at tournaments as well. She understood quite quickly that I get a little moody when I play but she deals with that pretty well.”
Carlsen also said that he was looking forward to having kids one day. “That is definitely in the plans.” But the World No 1 also said that he wouldn’t expect his kids to also pick the game up like he did. “I will not force anything on my kids when that day comes but I think chess is a great game and it’s fun and I think I will at least encourage my kids to test it.”
