A grand jury on Thursday indicted former movie producer Harvey Weinstein on additional charges, as announced by a prosecutor during a court hearing in New York. The details of the new charges have not yet been disclosed, Reuters reported.
During a hearing on July 9, prosecutors from the Manhattan district attorney’s office announced their plans to not only retry Weinstein but also to file new charges related to “additional violent sexual assaults” involving more women who have agreed to testify.
Judge Curtis Farber, who is overseeing the case, has scheduled a tentative trial date for November 12. The Manhattan jury previously found that Weinstein, co-founder of Miramax, sexually assaulted former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 and raped aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013.
These cases are part of the broader allegations from over 80 women who have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct.
Weinstein was convicted of rape in February 2020. However, in April, the New York Court of Appeals overturned the conviction, ruling that Weinstein had not received a fair trial due to a judge’s error in permitting testimony from accusers whom he had not been formally charged with assaulting.
The 72-year-old has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has asserted that he never engaged in any nonconsensual sexual encounters.
