The resurgence of the Samajwadi Party

The Samajwadi Party (SP), forged on October 4, 1992, by Mulayam Singh Yadav, arose from the shards of a schism within the Janata Dal. After its peak in 2012, the party faced a steady decline. In the 1993 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, the SP allied with the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), audaciously challenging the hegemony of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). This coalition succeeded and Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav became Chief Minister, marking the rise of backward caste politics in U.P.In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the SP grew stronger, winning 110 seats in the 1996 Assembly polls. Despite internal conflicts, Mr. Mulayam Singh Yadav returned as Chief Minister in 2003 through coalitions. However, in 2007, the SP lost to the BSP under Mayawati. The party rebounded in 2...

SP mouthpiece has a message in English. Focus on non-Hindi states & breaking from Mulayam’s mould

Apart from the party’s growing ambitions under the foreign educated Akhilesh Yadav, it also marks a generational change for the party founded by socialist leader Mulayam Singh Yaday in October 1992. Mulayam, in the 1990s, had launched a tirade against the use of English as a medium in education as well as protested against the introduction of computers. While Akhilesh still restricts himself to Hindi when it comes to connecting with the masses much like his father who was known as son of the soil, the SP chief — who holds a Master’s degree in environmental engineering from University of Sydney — seems to have taken the plunge for reaching out to non-Hindi speakers and, more importantly, young voters. Did BSP dent SP-Congress LS prospects in multiple seats? Here’s what seat-wise analysis shows

Of the 37 seats won by the SP, its margin of victory over the NDA counterpart in 18 seats was lower than the total number of votes secured by the BSP candidate in the fray — excluding seats reserved for SCs since each party has to field a member from the community in these seats, leaving little room for caste permutations and combinations. In 10 of these 18, BSP fielded upper caste and OBC candidates — Brahmins in five, and a Thakur, Kayastha, Kurmi, Prajapati and Patel in the remaining five – which may have led to a division of votes within these communities. These 10 seats were Kairana, Muzaffarnagar, Kheri, Dhaurahra, Sultanpur, Pratapgarh, Hamirpur, Banda, Fatehpur and Basti. In the remaining eight, BSP fielded Muslims. These were Sambhal, Firozabad, Etah, Badaun, Aonla, Ambedkar Nag...
