In the wake of the recent alleged rape at Kolkata’s Law College, in which the main accused is a former Trinamool Congress (TMC) student leader and a casual staffer, the West Bengal government has moved to implement a law — passed in 2022 — to centralise the recruitment of Group C and D staff in government-aided colleges through the West Bengal College Service Commission. Despite the bill’s passage, rules required for its implementation had not been framed until now. Story continues below this ad A senior offic...

Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita is redundant

Section 69 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has ostensibly reduced the gravity of cases of sexual intercourse registered on the false promise of marriage by reducing punishment, compared to the offence of rape defined under Section 63 BNS (or Section 375 of the IPC). | Photo Credit: Getty Images/iStockphoto Cases of rape registered on the premise of false promise of marriage have been in the eye of the storm for a long time. Swiss diplomat’s rape: Never solved, why 2003 case that rattled Delhi, embarrassed India, has found itself back under spotlight

It was a case that had rattled Delhi over two decades ago, and raised a question: Is the country’s capital safe for women? Any woman? On the night of October 14, 2003, a 28-year-old woman, returning to her car after a movie screening at the Siri Fort Auditorium in South Delhi, was overpowered by two men in the dimly lit parking lot.
