‘Like finding an oasis in desert …’: Nasa’s Curiosity rover stuns scientists with discovery of pure sulphur on Mars – Times of India

Nasa's Curiosity rover has made a groundbreaking discovery on Mars by uncovering pure sulphur after driving over and cracking open a rock. This unexpected find has intrigued scientists and renewed interest in Mars' geological history and potential for life, according to Space.com.Previously, Curiosity had detected sulphur on Mars, but only mixed with other minerals like magnesium and calcium. The discovery of pure sulphur, which forms under specific conditions, had not been observed in the rover's current location. According to Nasa, the sulphur seems to be present in many rocks in the region."Finding a field of stones made of pure sulphur is like finding an oasis in the desert," said Ashwin Vasavada, Curiosity’s project scientist at Nasa’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. "It sh...

How this ‘super moss’ may help humans survive on Mars: Scientists reveal – Times of India

A species of desert moss found in China's Xinjiang region has been identified by scientists as a potential candidate for sustaining future colonies on Mars, according to a study conducted by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The moss, known as Syntrichia Caninervis, exhibited remarkable resilience when exposed to conditions simulating the Martian environment, including extreme dryness, ultra-low temperatures, and radiation, the research, published in The Innovation journal on July 1, revealed. The scientists discovered that the moss possesses the ability to recover its photosynthetic and physiological activities within seconds of being hydrated, even after losing more than 98% of its cellular water content. Furthermore, the plant can withstand ultra-low temperatures and regenerate after b...

Nasa crew exits ‘Mars habitat’ after 378 days – Times of India

The crew of a Nasa mission to Mars emerged from their craft after a yearlong voyage that never left Earth. The four volunteer crew members spent more than 12 months inside Nasa's first simulated Mars environment at Johnson Space Center in Houston, coming out of the artificial alien enviroment Saturday around 5 pm. Kelly Haston, Anca Selariu, Ross Brockwell and Nathan Jones entered the 3D-printed habitat on June 25, 2023, as the maiden crew of the space agency's Crew Health and Performance Exploration Analog (CHAPEA) project.Haston, the mission commander, began with a simple, "Hello". "It's actually just so wonderful to be able to say 'hello' to you all," she said. Jones, a physician and the mission medical officer, said their 378 days in confinement "went by quickly."The quartet lived an...

‘Atoco Point’: Nasa’s rover stumbles upon rare boulder unseen before on Mars – Times of India

NEW DELHI: NASA's Perseverance rover has discovered a distinctive light-colored boulder in Neretva Vallis on Mars, a region that was once an ancient river channel feeding into the Jezero crater, according to a report by the news platform Mashable. This boulder stands out among the surrounding dark rocks and has been identified as potentially being an anorthosite, a rock type not previously found on Mars. While traversing the inlet, the rover encountered a hill covered in boulders, with one particular rock attracting attention, according to Katie Stack Morgan, deputy project scientist for NASA's Mars 2020 mission."Every once in a while, you'll just see some strange thing in the Martian landscape, and the team is like, 'Oh, let's go over there,'" the report quoted Katie Stack Morgan as sayi...

Mursan & Hilsa: Craters On Mars Named After Towns In UP And Bihar

The scientists of the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, have discovered three craters on Mars, making a significant stride in the realm of planetary exploration. Following their discovery, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) named one of them after the former PRL director and two others on small Indian towns. Physical Research Laboratory is a unit of the Department of Space of the Government of India.  The three newly-discovered craters are situated in the Tharsis volcanic region on Mars at around 21.0°S, 209°W. Based on the recommendation of the PRL, the IAU Working Group for Planetary System Nomenclature officially approved naming these craters as Lal crater, Mursan crater and Hilsa crater. Lal, Mursan & Hilsa Lal Cra...
