Bumrah likely to miss Champions Trophy group stage matches

IN A setback for India, strike bowler Jasprit Bumrah is likely to miss the group stage of next month’s Champions Trophy due to health reasons. The Indian Express has learnt that Bumrah, who has swelling on his back, has been asked to report to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru where his recovery will be monitored. The Champions Trophy, which will have the world’s top eight ODI teams, begins on February 19, with the matches scheduled at Karachi, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Dubai for India’s games. The national selectors, who met in Mumbai on Saturday to pick the team for the T20 series at home against England later this month, are learnt to have been updated about Bumrah’s fitness status. Sam Konstas opens up on altercations with Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah: ‘Told I idolise him, my family loves him’

Sam Konstas has said he had a ‘little chat’ with Indian superstar Virat Kohli and cleared the air after the Australian teen sensation was shoulder-barged by the Indian superstar during the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. However, he did not get a chance to speak to Jasprit Bumrah after the Sydney Test. Konstas, 19, had a breakthrough series after he was handed a Test debut in Melbourne where he went on to make a half-century with an aggressive approach that forced Team India to alter their gameplan. At the same time, he was involved in multiple altercations with Indian players, including Kohli and Bumrah. After the MCG Test, which Australia won, Konstas said he walked up to Kohli, his boyhood hero. “I had a little chat after the game telling him that I idolise him, and it’s obviously a huge...

When sentiment trumps form, the team is in trouble

When you hope to bat through a day to draw a Test match, more than two batters need to get into double figures. And neither of them ought to give it away. In the end, there were some 12 overs remaining in the Melbourne Test, the new ball was due, and India had got it wrong. Again. If it isn’t team selection, they get wrong the decision on winning the toss; if it isn’t keeping the flock together — Ashwin might be missed in Sydney — it is the struggling captain’s manner of reacting to situations rather than making things happen. If it isn’t loss of patience, it is stretching the improbable. Virat Kohli, with a hundred in the first Test, looked like he had overcome some of his problems outside the off stump while making 36. Then the run out of Yashasvi Jaiswal when he was non-striker ...

Watch: Head and shoulders – Jasprit Bumrah dismisses Travis Head for a duck with a ripper of a delivery

Travis Head, in former India coach Ravi Shastri’s words, has been a headache for India during this Border Gavaskar Trophy but Jasprit Bumrah ended his innings early on Thursday. The Aussie dangerman was bowled out for 0 off 7 balls. When Marnus Labuschagne’s wicket fell in the 66th over, Rohit Sharma brought on Bumrah immediately in the next over to have a go at Head. The Indian pace spearhead went around the wicket, bowled a length ball that darted back into the left-hander. The Aussie batsmen have constantly shown the ability to trust the bounce on these pitches and leave the ball just on length. But this ball was pitched so perfectly that it zoned in on the top of offstump like a heat-seeking missile. Head’s decision to shoulder arms proved to be the wrong one this time. It was the 50...

Bumrah equals Ashwin’s Indian record in ICC Test bowling rankings, crosses 900 rating points

Seam spearhead Jasprit Bumrah equalled spinner Ravichandran Ashwin’s record by earning the joint-highest Test bowling ratings ever by an Indian player on the eve of the Boxing Day Test. After his 9/94 in the drawn third Test in Brisbane, the fast bowler added 14 rating points to tie Ashwin’s all-time high of 904 rating points, solidifying his top spot in the rankings. When Thursday’s fourth Border-Gavaskar Test match starts at the MCG, Bumrah has an opportunity to surpass Ashwin’s rating points, which the now-retired off-spinner attained in December 2016. Josh Hazlewood (852) from Australia and Kagiso Rabada (856) from South Africa are in second and third place, respectively, behind Bumrah. India-Pakistan at neutral venue like a mouth-watering meal without salt, El Clasico in US

After many rounds of high-level bilateral discussions, India and Pakistan have finally given up on the highly popular and immensely profitable idea of ‘home’ and ‘away’ cricket. Starting with the ICC Champions Trophy early next year, till 2028 at least, the mother of all sporting rivalries will now be played out at neutral venues. At least for now, the door has been shut for good. The two bickering neighbours wouldn’t invite each other to their homes but in a mutual decision, that gives a strong whiff of hypocrisy, would readily play ball on foreign soil. So the expats can watch this storied rivalry unfold from the stands, the well-heeled fans from the two nations can take flights to these foreign destinations but the masses, the most interested stakeholders, can say goodbye to their dream ...

NEW DELHI: Former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif sees Rohit Sharma under pressure as he now has the twin task -- to score runs as batter and use Jasprit Bumrah carefully as skipper -- going forward in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. While Rohit flopped with the bat in the second game in Adelaide, scoring 3 and 6 in two innings, the skipper also faced a Bumrah injury scare as on the second day, Bumrah was seen in trouble while bowling.Amid a horrible show from the batters in both innings, the Bumrah injury came as a big scare but bowling coach Morne Morkel later assured that it was just a cramp. With no Mohammed Shami and an inexperienced bowling attack, Kaif feels that Rohit will have to be extra careful in using Bumrah while focussing on his own form with the bat.Rohit has been going through a r...
