Police and security forces in Jammu and Kashmir conducted searches in Udhampur’s Majalta Thursday after there were reports that two armed militants were sighted at Chor Panjwa village.

DIG Udhampur-Reasi Range Rayees Mohammad Bhat said the area — which is thickly-wooded — had been cordoned off and additional reinforcements have been sent in.

The sources said some militants had sought food from one of the houses in the village Wednesday night and left with a mobile phone from the family.

Although the police have officially refused to comment citing ongoing searches, security sources say the militants appear to belong to the same group that had fled from the forests near Panjtirthi area of Ramkote in Kathua after an encounter with the security forces on March 27.

The forests of Ramkote lie 15-20 km from Majalta.
