NEW DELHI: A man opened fire at Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Wednesday morning. Badal, in blue ‘sewadar’ uniform, was at the entrance of the Golden Temple in his wheelchair, serving his punishment. He has a fractured leg.
The person was overpowered by people present on the spot. The attacker was immediately taken into custody by the police. The motive of the attack is not known yet.
Sukhbir Singh Badal and other SAD leaders were at the Golden Temple to performed the duty of a ‘sewadar’ or volunteer after the Sikh clergy pronounced the ‘tankhah’ (religious punishment).
Badal and other leaders were punished by Shikh high priests for the “mistakes” committed by the Shiromani Akali Dal government in Punjab from 2007 to 2017.
