NEW DELHI: Chief election commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar has condemned the use of inappropriate language directed at female political leaders during Maharashtra’s election campaign, calling on officials to take swift and decisive action against any candidates making such remarks.
In a meeting with election and law enforcement officials, Kumar expressed strong disapproval and concern over language that undermines the dignity and respect of women, according to an ANI report.
According to the election code of conduct, “Political parties and candidates are to refrain from any deeds, actions, or utterances that may be construed as being repugnant to the honour and dignity of women.”
Kumar further stressed that candidates should avoid personal attacks or criticism unrelated to public roles. He instructed officials to ensure that any disrespectful comments toward women that violate the election code face immediate and strict repercussions.
The CEC expressed his hope that all participants in the elections would uphold respectful conduct and language, both in public and in their speeches.
On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also criticised leaders of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance for alleged derogatory comments about women.
This comes after controversial remarks made by Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant about Shiv Sena candidate Shaina NC. Sawant said, “Imported maal doesn’t work here; only original maal works. We have original maal.” However, he did not mention Shaina NC by name in his statement.
