White House diplomacy
The televised exchange between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has exposed the flaws in Mr. Trump’s diplomatic approach. His visible frustration, abrupt decision to cancel a mineral rights deal along with threats to withdraw U.S. aid, highlight a lack of strategic foresight in handling global conflicts.
Mr. Trump’s insistence that Ukraine show more “gratitude” for American support, while pressuring Mr. Zelenskyy to consider a ceasefire without firm security guarantees, reflects a transactional view of diplomacy. Such an approach ignores the reality that Ukraine is fighting for its sovereignty against an aggressive Russia. By prioritising short-term political gains over long-term global stability, Mr. Trump risks weakening the U.S.’s credibility among its allies and strengthening Russia’s position.
His erratic handling of the situation underscores the dangers of impulsive leadership in geopolitics. Instead of reinforcing western unity, Mr. Trump’s actions have created unnecessary uncertainty at a critical moment in international relations.

Mr. Trump is not known for exercising restraint in word or deed, which was evident in the White House meeting. The American leader played his natural role as the disruptive, overbearing leader who will stop at nothing to steal an advantage in a deal from friend or foe. Mr. Zelenskyy is caught in an unenviable position between the war on one side and a reluctant main ally on the other.

Mr. Trump is doing what is good for his country and what he promised to the American people. The Ukrainian leader deserved the dressing down as he is hell-bent on continuing a hopeless war against a formidable Russia. Mr. Zelenskyy’s rigidity will bring about the total destruction and devastation of his country. Russia’s Putin may even choose to use nuclear weapons.
