India pummelled Bangladesh to win the second Test and sweep the series 2-0 in Kanpur. The 7-wicket win increased their lead in WTC standings
NEW DELHI: India effectively needed two days to get the better of Bangladesh, winning the second Test by 7 wickets in Kanpur on Tuesday (1 October). The dominant win follows from an equally thumping 280-run triumph in the first Test in Chennai.
The 2-0 Test series clean sweep extended India’s lead at the top of the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. It also kept the Rohit Sharma-led side unbeaten in Test matches at home, their last series loss coming in 2012. Since then, India have lost only four Test matches.

India’s win was largely built on the fourth and fifth day after the second and third were washed out completely. The first day also was rain curtailed with just 35 overs being bowled with Bangladesh put in to bat.
On Tuesday, the spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja and pacer Jasprit Bumrah worked their magic as India dismissed Bangladesh for 146 in their second innings, giving the hosts a target of just 95 runs.
The lunch session was extended by half an hour to complete Bangladesh’s innings.
Ashwin posted figures of 3/50, while Jadeja took 3/34 and Bumrah grabbed 3/17 as Bangladesh, resuming their innings at 26/2, lost eight wickets in the extended morning session for the addition of 120 runs.
Overnight batter Shadman Islam was the highest scorer for Bangladesh in the second innings, scoring 50 runs.
Ashwin claimed his third wicket of the innings when he had Mominul Haque caught in the leg slip for two.
Islam (50) and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (19) offered brief resistance with a 55-run stand before poor shot selection and smart bowling changes by India led to their downfall.
Jadeja bowled Shanto after the batter fluffed a reverse sweep he should not have attempted in the first place considering the tricky situation they were in.
Shadman completed his fifty before playing away from his body, edging seamer Akash Deep to Yashasvi Jaiswal at the lone slip.
Left-arm spinner Jadeja removed Litton Das and Shakib Al Hasan in successive overs and seamer Bumrah sent back Mehidy Hasan Miraz to pin Bangladesh.
Mushfiqur Rahim (37) hung around for a bit before Bumrah removed him with the final delivery of the morning session.
During the 95-run chase, India lost Rohit Sharma (8) and Shubman Gill (6) early to Mehidy Hasan. Jaiswal, who had hit a rapid-fire 72 from 51 balls in the first innings, once again raced to 51 runs from 45 balls before perishing to Taijul Islam while trying to get past the finish line.
Rishabh Pant did the honours in the end, clearing the boundary rope with ease to seal the victory, which looked an improbable outcome after two washout days. Virat Kohli occupied the other end, remaining unbeaten on 29.
Bangladesh were bundled out for 233 in their first innings before India scored a quick-fire 285/9 and declared their innings on Monday.
