T’PURAM: CPI will soon select a candidate to take on Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in Wayanad, party’s Kerala state secretary Binoy Viswam said on Tuesday amid speculations over LDF’s pick in the constituency.
Viswam also took on the Congress, saying the party should not have deceived the people of Wayanad by keeping them unaware of the plan to field Rahul Gandhi from two seats in Lok Sabha elections.“CPI is contesting to ensure that non-Congress votes do not go to BJP. If Left does not contest against Congress, these votes will go to BJP and this should be avoided,” Viswam said, adding that while some have argued that CPI should stay away from the contest, he felt his party should not do anything that will aid BJP in Kerala.
On Rahul contesting from both Wayanad and Rae Bareli, Viswam said people of Wayand should have been told about the plan.
“CPI and Congress are part of the INDIA bloc that is contesting against BJP. Instead of contesting in BJP strongholds in north India, Congress tried to secure a safe seat for Rahul where they were sure that BJP will not be able to cause any damage. This was its failure. They should have taken up the challenge and fielded him in the north alone,” he said.
In the LS elections, CPI had fielded Annie Raja in Wayanad for LDF, but Rahul won the contest by a margin of 3.64lakh votes.
