THE SUPREME Court on Tuesday set aside the Calcutta High Court order directing a CBI probe into the Mamata Banerjee government’s decision to create supernumerary posts to accommodate about 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff who lost their jobs following the court ruling their selection by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) as illegal. At the end of it was a Sultanate-age garden known as ...

The National Green Tribunal (NGT) issued an order limiting air horn usage on major roads between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. However, enforcement agencies, including the traffic police, transport department, and pollution control board, have still not implemented the order. What the NGT should have done is to evaluate the possibility of its order being implemented or taken action which would be implementable. This would mean complete ban of air horns, which it did not consider. Consequently, the issue remains unresolved after more than two years.Judicial orders that incorporate strategies to overcome e...

Scorching tradeApril has turned out to be the cruellest month given the rapidity with which a trade war is unfolding globally on account of the Trump tariffs affecting global markets. The Trump tariffs are a problem as there is also a legal aspect, their permanence (will there be a political blowback after an upending of trade relations with the rest of the world?), and their effectiveness (how many American CEOs will decide to allocate billions of dollars towards new factories in the U.S.?)
