Delhi High Court Judge Recuses From Hearing Death Penalty Petition For Yasin Malik

A Delhi High Court judge on Thursday recused himself from hearing NIA's plea seeking the death penalty for Yasin Malik, the chief of banned Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), who is undergoing a life sentence in a terror funding case. After Justice Amit Sharma withdrew himself from hearing the case, the bench presided over by Justice Prathiba M. Singh directed the matter to be listed before a different combination on August 9 after obtaining approval from the Acting Chief Justice. In an earlier order, the Delhi High Court had directed the Jail Superintendent of Tihar Jail to produce Malik from jail through video conferencing (VC) on the next date of hearing. In May 2022, Malik -- who pleaded guilty -- was sentenced to life imprisonment by a special NIA court in a terror funding cas...

Taiwan Detects Record 66 Chinese Aircraft Around Island In 24 Hours

Taiwan's defence ministry said Thursday it had detected 66 Chinese military aircraft around the island in a 24-hour window, a record-high this year, a day after it said Beijing was conducting exercises in nearby waters. China -- which maintains a near-daily military presence around Taiwan -- claims the self-ruled island as part of its territory and has said it will never renounce the use of force to bring it under its control. Thursday's record comes a day after Taipei spotted Chinese aircraft around the island that it said were headed to the western Pacific for exercises with the PLA aircraft carrier Shandong. "66 PLA aircraft and seven PLAN vessels operating around Taiwan were detected up until 6 am (2200 GMT Wednesday) today," the defence ministry said in Thursday's statement, adding it...

The fire that broke out Thursday in the spire of the cathedral in the northern French city Rouen has been extinguished, local fire services said, with no major damage reported. A section of plastic sheeting covering renovation work 120 metres (400 feet) up the cathedral's spire caught fire, though officials have not said how the blaze started. Resort politics has made a comeback in Maharashtra, and so has the possibility of cross-voting and horsetrading, as the state gears up to hold elections for 11 Legislative Council seats on Friday. Riding high after its unexpectedly good performance in the Lok Sabha polls, in which it won 30 of the state's 48 seats, the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi has fielded three candidates, one more than it has the numbers to elect, necessitating the election. The Maharashtra Assembly, which has 288 seats, currently has 274 members, meaning that every MLC candidate needs 23 first-preference votes to get elected. The ruling Mahayuti - part of the larger NDA alliance - which consists of the BJP, the Eknath Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena and the Ajit Pawar wing of the NCP, has fielded nine candidates and ...

Delhi High Court Upholds 50% Warning Label Size On Pan Masala Packages

The Delhi High Court has upheld food safety regulator FSSAI's decision to enhance the size of statutory warnings against injury to health on pan masala packages to 50 per cent of the front of the label from the earlier 3 mm. A bench headed by Acting Chief Justice Manmohan dismissed a petition by a pan masala manufacturer, who challenged a notification issued by the FSSAI in October 2022, and said the mandate gives effect to the legislative intent of safeguarding the larger public interest in health, which is paramount, and outweighs the individual loss to a manufacturer. "The present writ petition stands dismissed along with the pending application," the bench, also comprising Justice Manmeet PS Arora, said in the judgment dated July 9. The petitioners, Dharampal Satyapal Ltd -- a licensed...

James Anderson Strikes As England Eye Huge Win vs West Indies In 1st Test

James Anderson led the way in his farewell international match as England closed in on a crushing innings win over the West Indies in the first Test at Lord's on Thursday. The West Indies had slumped to 79-6 in their second innings at stumps on the second day, still a mammoth 171 runs behind England's first-innings 371, with Anderson having taken a miserly 2-11 in 10 overs. England great Anderson came into his 188th and last Test before international retirement having already taken 700 wickets -- the most by any fast bowler in the 147-year history of the format. Yet the 41-year-old had to wait until dismissing last man Jayden Seales in the first innings to extend that tally to 701. But it was a different story on Thursday as Anderson reduced the tourists to 12-1 by bowling West Indies capt...
