Macron has three years to serve out his term as prez.Le Pen has repeatedly said that Jordan Bardella, her protegee, will lead France's next govt if their party wins. Brazil top court decriminalises pot possession for personal use – Times of India

BRASILIA: Brazil's Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that purchasing and possessing up to 40 grams of marijuana for personal use will no longer be a crime, though police can still seize the drug. Marijuana continues to be illegal in Brazil and its use in public places will still be prohibited. But a person caught using marijuana and possessing up to 40 grams - roughly enough for 80 joints - will not receive a criminal record and will just appear before a judge to hear a warning on the drug's dangers, it ruled.Police will, however be able to arrest a person caught selling marijuana even if it is less than 40 grams, when there are clear signs of intent to sell it, the justices decided. The verdict makes the nation of 203 million the largest to take such a measure and the latest sign of a grow...

Elon Musk’s SpaceX gets $843m to help discard ISS around 2030 – Times of India

WASHINGTON: Nasa awarded SpaceX $843m to build a vehicle capable of pushing the Internation Space Station into Earth's atmosphere for its planned destruction around 2030, it said on Wednesday, a task originally meant for Russia's thrusters. Under its new Nasa contract, SpaceX will build what the space agency called the US Deorbit Vehicle to deorbit the ISS and avoid risks to populated areas, with Nasa taking ownership of the craft and handling the deorbiting operation. The football field-sized research lab, led primarily by the US and Russia, has been continuously staffed with govt astronauts during its some 24 years of operation, but its aging components have led Nasa and its foreign partners to set 2030 as a planned retirement date. The first segment of the ISS was launched in 1998. W...

Letters to The Editor — June 28, 2024

On the Emergency It is strange that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance government is now harping on the excesses of the Emergency instead of addressing the pressing concerns being experienced by the people of India (Page 1, June 27). It is noteworthy that there was no mention of the ongoing ethnic strife in Manipur that has drawn world-wide attention. The BJP does not seem to have changed its spots. If this is its tone and tenor, government and Opposition cooperation and any meaningful dialogue between the two of them is unlikely to happen. V. Padmanabhan Bengaluru The Emergency days were traumatic not only for the general public but also for many a political leader, government employees and several other sections of the society including the media. Unwarranted arrest: On the case of Arvind Kejriwal

The arrest of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal by the CBI in the Delhi excise policy corruption case is unwarranted and appears tainted by bad faith. It was effected just before the Supreme Court of India was due to hear an appeal against a Delhi High Court order that had stayed the bail granted to him by a lower court in a money-laundering case related to the same allegation. The High Court had stalled his release on a plea by the Enforcement Directorate, but reserved its detailed order. The Supreme Court had deferred its hearing to June 26 to await the outcome. However, the High Court, by a detailed order, formalised the stay on the grant of bail. On June 26 morning, the CBI effected his formal arrest and sought his custody for interrogation in a CBI court. It is quite strange tha...

“His View, Not Congress’s”: Sam Pitroda On Jairam Ramesh’s “Assurance” Post

Sam Pitroda, the Congress's overseas unit chief, is back in his post -- with an apparent caveat. The party's communication in-charge Jairam Ramesh said Mr  Pitroda had "given an assurance" that he would, in future, leave no room for controversy. Jairam is saying that," he told NDTV in an exclusive interview today. "What Jairam says is Jairam's view, it is not necessarily the party's view. It is okay for Jairam to say that and I respect it. I have to do what I have to do. In the process, I am entitled to make mistakes," he said. Emergency May Have Been Undemocratic, Not Unconstitutional: Shashi Tharoor To NDTV

Decrying the excesses that had taken place during the period, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has hit out at the government for using the Emergency as a "diversionary tactic" and said that while imposing it may have been undemocratic, it was not unconstitutional. In an exclusive interview with NDTV on Thursday, the senior leader, who has just been reelected as the MP from Thiruvananthapuram for the fourth consecutive time, also addressed issues like the demand for replacing the 'sengol' and the NEET paper leaks, which are set to dominate the ongoing session of Parliament.  To a question on the Congress and other opposition parties opposing the references to the Emergency by Speaker Om Birla on Thursday and President Droupadi Murmu in her address on Friday, Mr Tharoor asked why something tha...
