Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh Thursday assured the people of Delhi of “providing a safe water supply” during a visit to the Wazirabad Water Treatment Plant Thursday to inspect and review operations.
He was accompanied by Timarpur MLA Surya Prakash Khatri.
Both leaders drank the water (which was processed after the initial process of filtration) at the facility after checking TDS (Total Dissolved Solid) levels. “We checked the TDS (Total Dissolved Solid) levels, the water quality was found to be at safe levels… Our priority is to provide clean drinking water to the people of Delhi,” the minister said.
The water level at the Wazirabad Barrage stood at 674.5 mm, according to the Delhi Jal Board officials at the site. The plant draws raw water from the barrage. Among the challenges mentioned by DJB officials in their briefing to the BJP leaders included the treatment of excessive ammonia levels contaminating the raw water.
Singh said accumulation of silt over a decade has reduced the plant’s operational capacity and that desilting work is underway and will be completed within a month and a half.
He added that measures are being taken to ensure there are no leakages and a new pipeline is to be laid keeping in mind the growing population.
The BJP-led Haryana government is releasing water in adequate amounts, Singh said. “There is no stench here… the Haryana government is releasing water as per agreement.”
