Karnataka Govt Set To Impose 1-2% Fee On Aggregator Platforms To Support Gig Workers: Report

The Karnataka government is likely to introduce a 1-2 per cent fee on transactions made through popular aggregator platforms such as Zomato, Swiggy, Flipkart, Amazon, Ola, Uber, Urban Company, and others. The move is part of a broader effort to provide social security for gig workers engaged in these platforms. A senior government official revealed to Moneycontrol that the fee, once implemented, will be directed towards a welfare board dedicated to supporting gig workers in delivery and other platform-based services. The funds collected from the fee will go towards introducing social security measures for these workers. Zomato’s independent director Gunjan Tilak Raj Soni has resigned from her position with immediate effect. According to a stock exchange filing, Soni is leaving the online food delivery company due to ‘increased work commitments’. West Bengal government slaps Rs 17.7 crore GST demand and penalty order on Zomato; company to appeal – Times of India

Online food delivery platform Zomato has been hit with a significant GST demand order from the West Bengal government. The company was issued a notice by the Assistant Commissioner of Revenue demanding Rs 17.7 crore in GST, interest, and penalties. The period for which Zomato is facing these GST charges and penalty is -- from April 2021 to March 2022.The Assistant Commissioner of Revenue, Government of West Bengal confirmed demand of GST of Rs 11,12,79,712 with interest of Rs 5,46,81,021 and penalty of Rs 1,11,27,971.The demand stems from alleged non-payment of GST on delivery charges.
