‘Centre wants to hand over Waqf land to its industrialist friends’: Uddhav Thackeray

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday slammed the Centre over the Waqf (Amendment) Bill saying the BJP-led government is eying the Waqf land to meet the interests of industrialists. Thackeray said his party opposed the Waqf Bill in Parliament as it was against the seizure of Waqf land. “If the government wants to take over land then first take over the land which has been grabbed by Pakistan and China. We have opposed the Bill since the government’s intention is to grab the Waqf land and give it to its industrialist friends,” Thackeray said at a press conference in Mumbai after the Bill was passed in Lok Sabha. Thackeray said the controversial Bill was introduced in Parliament to divert attention from the issue of US’ reciprocal tax tariff that posed a challenge to India. ...

Why Congress leadership’s iftar engagements signal shift in approach to ‘appeasement’ charge

New Delhi: Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi attended Congress Rajya Sabha MP Imran Pratapgarhi’s Iftar party in New Delhi last week, seven years after hosting a similar gathering, only to later discontinue the practice. It is a sign of the times that Rahul’s presence at the event, which was attended by leaders from every Opposition party, was seen as politically significant in a city where such gatherings were once a fixture of the annual calendar. ‘Tarpaulin hijab’ to urging Muslims to stay indoors, what’s behind BJP’s Holi narrative

“Holi is a special festival and comes only once in year while Friday comes 52 times a year,” Chaudhary, a wrestler-turned-police officer also known as a ‘super cop’, told the media after a peace committee meeting. He added: “If the people of the Muslim community feel that the colours of Holi will corrupt their religion, then they should not leave their homes on that day. If any miscreant is found doing anything wrong on Holi, then he will not be spared. We will not let peace and order deteriorate in Sambhal.”His remarks, widely circulated on social media, sparked a wider push by BJP leaders across Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Bengal and Delhi, urging Muslims to remain inside for Friday prayers. Chaudhary’s comments received an endorsement from Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at the In...

In Modi’s appearance at Jahan-e-Khusrau, a telling message of unity ahead of Bihar polls

New Delhi: When Prime Minister Narendra Modi stepped onto the stage at the Jahan-e-Khusrau Sufi music festival in New Delhi Friday, it was not just about melodies and poetry. His first ever presence at such an event was meant to send a clear political message to all. This festival, founded by filmmaker Muzaffar Ali and organised by the Rumi Foundation, has been a major platform for Sufi music, poetry and dance since 2001. Coming as it does just a few months after a Hindu lawyer sparked controversy by claiming that the revered Khwaja Gharib Nawaz Dargah Sharif in Ajmer was once a Hindu temple, the Prime Minister’s attendance felt like a deliberate counter-narrative—a gesture of unity aimed at India’s Muslim community, a group the BJP sees as key to cracking the Opposition’s hold on Muslim v...
