‘Welcome move’: RBI rate cut brings relief for Mumbai homebuyers, boosts real estate sentiment

The Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI’s) decision to reduce the repo rate by 25 basis points to 6 per cent has brought optimism to Mumbai’s real estate market. This marks the second consecutive rate cut in recent months, following a similar 25 bps reduction in February, bringing the rate down from 6.50 per cent to 6.25 per cent earlier. With rates currently at their lowest since 2022, home loan consumers in Mumbai, one of India’s priciest housing markets, are likely to gain through reduced EMIs and better loan eligibility. Banks are set to cut their lending rates, which will have a direct impact on monthly outgo for homebuyers. For example, a Rs 50 lakh home loan for 25 years at a rate of interest of 8.25 percent as compared to 8.75 percent would reduce the EMI by around Rs 1,600, helping borro...

Vikhroli railway overbridge in Mumbai likely to be ready by July

Nearly 28 years later since the project was first conceptualised, Vikhroli Railway Over Bridge (ROB) in Mumbai is set to be operational by July. Background of the project: Originally conceived in 1997, the bridge was proposed as an alternative to a level crossing that existed at Vikhroli. Commuters travelling in the east-west direction often used to trespass the crossing and in many cases, people had lost their lives. Following this, the authorities mooted a proposal to build Vikhroli bridge as an alternative. Even though the crossing was sealed during the early 2000s, the bridge still couldn’t be built within a decade after its conceptualisation. It was only in 2018 that the tenders for the bridge were finally floated and work orders issued. Significance of the bridge: The bridge will con...

‘Centre wants to hand over Waqf land to its industrialist friends’: Uddhav Thackeray

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray on Thursday slammed the Centre over the Waqf (Amendment) Bill saying the BJP-led government is eying the Waqf land to meet the interests of industrialists. Thackeray said his party opposed the Waqf Bill in Parliament as it was against the seizure of Waqf land. “If the government wants to take over land then first take over the land which has been grabbed by Pakistan and China. We have opposed the Bill since the government’s intention is to grab the Waqf land and give it to its industrialist friends,” Thackeray said at a press conference in Mumbai after the Bill was passed in Lok Sabha. Thackeray said the controversial Bill was introduced in Parliament to divert attention from the issue of US’ reciprocal tax tariff that posed a challenge to India. ...
