Meghalaya: 10 Killed In Flash Foods Triggered By Torrential Rainfall

At least 10 people, including seven of a family, were killed in flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall that ravaged Meghalaya's South Garo Hills district in the past 24 hours. The incessant rainfall in the district has also caused landslides in the Gasuapara region, according to officials.  Tragedy befell the family of seven, who died after getting trapped inside their home in the remote village of Hatiasia Songma when a landslide struck. Of the seven deceased, three were minors. Three people were also killed in rain related incident in the Dalu area. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma held a review meeting on the situation across the five districts of Garo Hills. Meghalaya university which grew from 6 to 6,000 students sees dip in enrollments after Sarma’s attack

New Delhi: The ongoing admission process at the University of Science and Technology (USTM) in Meghalaya has been adversely hit after a barrage of statements by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma targeting it, its Chancellor Mahbubul Hoque told ThePrint. Hoque cited how Sarma reportedly said last week that students from USTM, may be barred from government jobs in Assam. The university now fears it will fall short of this year’s target for enrollments, Hoque said. Managed by a foundation of which Hoque—a Bengali-Muslim from Assam— is founder-chairman, the private university has been under fire over the past few weeks, with Sarma making several critical remarks against it and its chancellor. Small States must prioritise raising their own revenue to reduce their dependency on the Union government The fiscal situation of India’s States has garnered significant attention in recent times. Despite ample data on State finances, most of the analysis is centred around larger States. There needs to be more discussion on the fiscal position of small States (i.e. States with a population of less than 1 crore). Most of these small States have distinctive characteristics that limit revenue mobilisation. Recognising these disabilities, the Constitution has provided mechanisms to address them. But these States continue to rely heavily on the Union government for revenue.
