THE SUPREME Court on Tuesday set aside the Calcutta High Court order directing a CBI probe into the Mamata Banerjee government’s decision to create supernumerary posts to accommodate about 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff who lost their jobs following the court ruling their selection by the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) as illegal. The bench presided by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, however, said the CBI probe into other aspects of the scam would continue. On April 3, the SC upheld the HC order that invalided the WBSSC’s 2016 appointment of more than 25,000 teachers and non-teaching staff, terming the entire selection process “tainted beyond resolution” and calling for a fresh selection process to fill the vacancies. However, the court said it will separately ...

A war of words has erupted between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP in West Bengal after former Calcutta High Court judge and BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay on Friday proposed that a committee be set up to look into the fallout of the Supreme Court upholding the cancellation of more than 25,000 teaching and non-teaching jobs in the state. “Didi (Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee) should constitute a committee…I believe that, even today, eligible and ineligible candidates can be segregated. Our fight was for a corruption-free education system. Those who were deserving candidates have been fighting to get their jobs but have been deprived b...
