Japan’s elderly population hits record high – Times of India

Japan's elderly population has reached an all-time high of 36.25 million people, with 29.3 per cent of the country's total population aged 65 or older, according to data released on Sunday by the country's ministry of internal affairs and communications.The report shows that approximately 20.53 million females aged 65 or older, representing 32.3 per cent of the country's total female population.On the other hand, the number of senior citizen men is comparatevely lower, with around 15.72 million, accounting for 26.1 per cent of the male population. Among the 200 countries and regions with populations exceeding 100,000, Japan ranks first in terms of the proportion of elderly residents.
