Over 50% of postal votes in Haryana went to Congress, victorious BJP got less than 35%

New Delhi: Even as it failed to win, the Congress bagged 51.7 percent of the postal ballots cast in the Haryana assembly elections, markedly more than the 34.89 percent of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—which has returned to power for the third straight term with a comfortable majority—according to Election Commission data. The Congress won more postal ballots—which accounted for only 0.57 percent of the total votes cast—than the BJP in as many as 74 of the 90 assembly seats in Haryana. In terms of total vote share, which takes into account both postal ballots and votes cast through electronic voting machines (EVMs), the two parties were neck and neck, with the BJP securing 39.94 percent against the Congress’s 39.09 percent. Of the 90 seats, 48 were won by the BJP, while 37 went to Congr...

Haryana numbers show Congress had best strike rate among Jats, BJP among Punjabis & Ahirs

BJP concentrated its efforts on attracting non-Jat and OBC voters, which seems to have worked effectively. The party gained more traction than the Congress among Brahmins, Punjabi Khatris, Yadavs and non-Jat Dalits, which helped secure the party’s third consecutive victory in Haryana. The survey shows that the Congress managed to rally a significant portion of Jatav voters among Dalits, a group closely associated with senior Congress leader Kumari Selja. Additionally, it secured support from Muslims and Sikhs, who make up about 7 and 4 percent of the total electorate, respectively. The BJP’s Punjabi and Ahir candidates had the best strike rates. Among Punjabis, the Congress had fielded eight candidates and won three seats, whereas the BJP scored nine wins with 11 tickets. In the Ahir communi...

‘Tried to divide us for 10 yrs.’ Why Rao Inderjit is taking on fellow Union minister Khattar

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is still celebrating its victory in the Haryana Assembly elections. A day after declaration of results, several party leaders and workers gathered at Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s residence to congratulate him for his role in the party’s win and discuss the formation of the new government. Against this backdrop, another Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh has taken aim at Khattar without naming him and accused the former Haryana chief minister of trying to weaken his and his daughter Arti Rao’s position in his stronghold—the Ahirwal belt of the state. Addressing BJP workers at his residence, Rampura House in Rewari, Rao Inderjit said: “We had a chief minister… I will not take his name. He tried to divide us, pit us against each other for 10 ...

BJP’s Haryana hurricane

Late in the evening of October 8, even as the euphoria over the surprise victory in Haryana was still sinking in, Prime Minister Narendra Modi followed a tradition he has set in place after every important election win—appearing at the BJP headquarters in the national capital to address jubilant party workers. After the party agonisingly fell short of the majority mark in the Lok Sabha election in June, the mood had turned sombre and introspective. But now, with the miraculous ‘hat-trick of assembly wins’ in Haryana and the creditable performance in Jammu and Kashmir, the josh is back among BJP workers.Source link

Profile | Nayab Singh Saini: From shadows to spotlight

In a stunning political outcome, Nayab Singh Saini, once dismissed as a lightweight protégé of former chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, has emerged as Haryana’s unexpected victor. Leading the BJP to its best-ever assembly performance with 48 seats and a 39.94 per cent vote share, Saini has not only neutralised a decade of potential anti-incumbency but also etched his name among the select few chief ministers who have successfully defended their mandate in the state.Source link

Frequent paroles, furloughs to rape & murder convict Ram Rahim did little for BJP in Haryana polls

Jyoti Mishra, a researcher at the Delhi-based Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, said the Dera Sacha Sauda leader did not significantly impact voting patterns during the election. Caste-based voting patterns, she added, had a greater impact on the election results in these constituencies than Ram Rahim’s voter appeal. “This is because the Dera’s influence is primarily among Dalit communities, and the 28 assembly constituencies, believed to be home to Dera followers, tend to have a mixed population,” she told ThePrint.“In fact, in the 15 assembly constituencies where the Congress won, the Jat and Jat Sikh populations were more prominent, consolidating support for the Congress. On the other hand, in the seats won by the BJP, non-Jat castes formed the majority, which favoured the p...

Congress | Lessons not learnt

The Congress party’s stunning defeat in Haryana, a state it was widely expected to win, and its below-par performance in Jammu and Kashmir, signify more than just a temporary stumble. These setbacks have again exposed the deeper structural flaws that plague the party. In Haryana, the Congress secured 37 seats in the 90-member assembly, losing an election supporters and even opponents presumed would be a straightforward win. In J&K, the party won only six of the 32 seats it contested and will be part of the government only because of the strong showing by its ally, the National Conference.Source link

Behind Congress’s shock defeat in Haryana, rebels, Independents & INDIA bloc allies

A third Congress rebel went on to win. Rajesh Joon, who contested as an Independent from the Bahadurgarh seat after being denied a ticket by the party, won the seat handsomely by 41,999 votes. On Wednesday, Joon joined the BJP.The Congress also suffered to some extent due to the AAP, its INDIA bloc ally, which may have cornered a vote share of just 1.79 percent but polled enough votes in three seats to pave the way for the BJP to race ahead and helped the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) win in one. The INLD itself played spoiler for the Congress in three seats.Political analyst Asim Ali told ThePrint that while the Congress and BJP got similar vote shares—39.09 percent and 39.94 percent respectively—in terms of the median vote share, which refers to the vote share minus the outliers where t...

BJP’s Haryana win boosts its position in Mahayuti, but may not translate into easy gains in Maharashtra

Mumbai: The Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) best-ever victory in Haryana may boost the morale of party workers in Maharashtra and have an impact on its power within the Mahayuti alliance, but it is, perhaps, still a tall order for the BJP to replicate what happened in Haryana in Maharashtra. Haryana saw its regional parties being almost wiped out with Dushyant Chautala’s Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) failing to open its account, and the Indian National Lok Dal winning just two seats, reducing Haryana to an almost two-party state. On the other hand, when Maharashtra votes next month, regional parties, especially the two Shiv Senas and the two Nationalist Congress Parties, are likely to play a dominant role with there being six major parties in the fray. Haryana saw a direct fight between Jats a...

After Haryana Hat-trick, BJP’s Nayab Singh Saini Lands in Delhi; Oath Taking Likely On Dashami

A day after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured the comfortable third term in Haryana, Chief Minister Nayyab Singh Saini, along with the party's state President Manohar Lal Khattar, landed in Delhi on Wednesday (September 8) to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Singh is set to take oath as Haryana Chief Minister for the second time on Dusshera, Oct 12, as per reports.  Battling anti-incumbency, the BJP, months before the Haryana Assembly polls, replaced its strongman Manohar Lal Khattar as chief minister with low-profile OBC leader Nayab Singh Saini. The decision surprised many.  On Tuesday, the BJP's gamble paid off with Saini leading the party to victory in the Haryana Assembly polls after a dismal showing in the Lok Sabha elections in the state and defying exit poll predictions of...

‘First post-Modi victory for BJP’—how Haryana elections show RSS is still the boss

New Delhi: In May this year, in the middle of the Lok Sabha election, BJP president J. P. Nadda had made national headlines when he said the party is now saksham (capable), and no longer needs its ideological mentor Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to campaign for it. The result of that election, which the RSS cadres largely sat out, was a significantly reduced mandate for the BJP at the Centre.  Just a few months later, the same RSS cadres campaigned tirelessly for the party in Haryana—going door-to-door distributing voter slips and pamphlets, organising thousands of meetings, collecting feedback for the party from the ground, and even recommending poll candidates. BJP shatters predictions of Congress triumph in Haryana, attributes success to ‘pro-incumbency vote’

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is winning Haryana for the third straight term, a feat unprecedented in the state’s history, shattering the Congress’ hope of ending a decade’s power drought, with it being left to draw cold comfort from the likely clear majority to its alliance with the National Conference in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Who Will Be Next Haryana CM? Congress, BJP Will Be Faced With Tough Choices
