The poll panel will hold a press conference at 3:30 pm on Tuesday to announce the election dates. The term of the Maharashtra Assembly will end on November 26 while that of Jharkhand will end on January 5 next year.  The elections in Maharashtra are the most-awaited polls this year as they will test the electoral fate of the two major alliances, the ruling Mahayuti and the opposition's Maha Vikas  Aghadi amid immense political upheaval in the past five years. Congress Lost 9 Seats In Haryana By A Margin Of Less Than 6,000 Votes, EC Data Shows

The BJP on Tuesday headed for a comfortable win in Haryana after leading on 48 seats in the 90-member assembly. Though the BJP had a wide margin against Congress in terms of seats, the vote share between the two parties was razor-thin. While the saffron party received 39.94 per cent votes, the Congress managed to get 39.09 per cent votes in the assembly polls. The contrast between the gap in seats and vote share was evident on some seats, where the victory margin between the winner and runner-up was thin.  In 8 out of 90 seats in Haryana where the BJP won against Congress candidates, the victory margin was less than 6,000 votes, an assessment of the Election Commission data showed. While in one seat (Dabwali), the INLD candidate won against Congress with a margin of 610 votes. The election...

Behind BJP’s historic 3rd term in Haryana, grassroots-level cadre, RSS support & Congress hubris

Gurugram: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sprung a surprise in the Haryana Assembly elections, bettering its performance from the Lok Sabha elections in which it led in 44 assembly segments. On Tuesday, it won 48 seats, although its vote share witnessed a decline to 39.94 percent from over 46 percent in the Lok Sabha polls. Interestingly, with almost an equal voter share (39.09 percent), the Congress won just 36 seats and led on one, according to the Election Commission data as of 8pm. From losing 5 out of 10 seats in the Lok Sabha where the party trailed behind the INDIA bloc candidates on 46 of 90 assembly seats, the BJP in Haryana has virtually turned the tables with the party likely to form government for the third time in a row—a first in the state’s 57-year history. The BJP’s perfor...

Joy to bitterness in 4 months. How Congress crashed in Haryana after cruising post LS poll results

New Delhi: Having turned the corner in the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress had everything going for it in Haryana. The party had the momentum in its favour; it was ahead of its rivals in the perception game, political narratives were working to its advantage; and it ran its campaign with aggression and vigour. The occasional sceptics did point out that the Congress’ confidence may have been bordering on complacency. That it could have avoided putting all eggs in the Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s basket; that it could have done more to mollify a sulking Kumari Selja, the party’s veteran Dalit face in the state. But the Congress remained upbeat. It was eager to prove that its performance in the general elections was not a fluke, but a clear sign of a shift in the country’s political mood. The ro...

Congress’s Surender Panwar centres Sonipat battle around his ED arrest, but voters see it as non-issue

As the Congress candidate reached out to voters in a bid to win the Sonipat seat for a second time, he pitched the election as a referendum on his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) as he takes on the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in his constituency.Panwar was arrested on 20 July by the economic intelligence agency as part of its investigation into a money laundering case arising out of illegal mining in Yamunanagar district. After sitting out LS polls, RSS campaigning hard for BJP in Haryana. ‘Not the time for anger’

Kurukshetra/Gurugram: “The socially aware understand that caste politics breaks society. It is the duty of responsible people to maintain unity and brotherhood,” a pamphlet being distributed by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) karyakartas in every household in Kurukshetra district of Haryana reads. “One has been speaking, complaining, questioning for 4 years, 11 months and 364 days. If one does not go to vote the one remaining day, they have no right to speak, complain or question.” On the face of it, the pamphlet is politically neutral. It does not ask the voter to cast their vote in favour of any one political party. Titled Matdata Jagrukta Abhiyan: 100% matdan (voter awareness programme—100 percent voting), its appeal is seemingly straightforward—it is the duty of every voter to cast t...

A love story dashed Chander Mohan’s CM dream 15 yrs ago. This time, his Haryana campaign’s a family affair

Panchkula: Thirteen years after the death of Bhajan Lal, his son Chander Mohan is leaning hard on the former Haryana chief minister’s legacy as he contests from Panchkula in the state polls. The Congress candidate, too, carries his father’s dream of transforming Panchkula into Paris. That’s not all. He is also promising to make Panchkula the capital of Haryana. While Hooda and his son Deepender are the chief campaigners for the party, their photos are noticeably missing from posters and banners in Panchkula, as Chander Mohan canvasses in the name of Bhajan Lal, who rebelled against the Congress after it chose Hooda as the CM in 2005.Selja has urged the public to vote for Chander Mohan, emphasising that only “he can work for the people of Panchkula”.He is up against a formidable opponent in ...

‘Badlav’ on lips of Haryanvis, BJP faces uphill struggle. Anti-incumbency from Khattar rule a big factor

For the BJP, the biggest challenge is the anti-incumbency of 10 years when M.L. Khattar headed the government. And this is despite the people agreeing that the ruling party gave a transparent, corruption-free rule with no major scams rocking the administration. Many of the decisions taken by Khattar have made the BJP government unpopular although Saini is getting sympathy for making pro-people decisions in the past four months. His easy going nature and accessibility to the people, unlike Khattar, often come up in conversations on the ground. The BJP is hoping that a split in Jat votes by raking up the narrative of Congress leader Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s dominance, OBC polarisation, and the people’s sympathy for Saini would stem the surge of the Congress in Haryana. The dominant Jats are pol...

BJP tries to tap Congress faultlines to grab Haryana Dalit vote. But on the ground, a yen for change

“Our crop is not getting MSP. Why will we vote for the BJP? They have done nothing for the poor except give free rations. We are not voting for the BJP this time,” he added.Vedpal’s friend Krishna, also a farmer, nodded in agreement. Dalit anger against the BJP may be mounting, but the BJP isn’t giving up without a fight. As the polls draw closer, the ruling party is trying to consolidate the crucial Dalit vote, using reports of infighting in the Congress after prominent Dalit leader Kumari Selja stayed away from election campaign, and by raking up decades-old cases of violence against Dalits. Analysts suggest that a decade of anti-incumbency, ongoing farmers’ protests, rising unemployment, the Agniveer protests, and the Congress’s constitutional change campaign have collectively strengthe...
