Bibi’s firing of Israel defence chief draws both ire & praise – Times of India

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's shock firing of his defence chief on Tuesday night removed a cabinet critic, but also deepened anger among opponents about his handling of the country's multi-front conflict. In Yoav Gallant, Netanyahu had a defence minister who challenged many of his plans for the war against Hamas in Gaza and threatened the stability of his fragile coalition. Netanyahu said the trust between him and Gallant had broken down. Gallant, who spoke regularly with Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin and helped Israel and the US weather tensions between Netanyahu and Biden, cited three reasons for being fired. One of them, he said, was to do with the conduct of war in Gaza. Gallant long said the best way to get the hostages released was to accept a phased ceasefire even if it ...

UK PM says year of Israel-Hamas war hit community ties – Times of India

LONDON: UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Sunday called for a ceasefire in Gaza and restraint by all parties, saying the year-long Israel-Hamas conflict had affected community relations in Britain."The sparks light touchpapers in our own communities here at home," Starmer wrote in the Sunday Times ahead of the anniversary of the Palestinian militant group's unprecedented October 7 attack against Israel which sparked the war."Israel and the Middle East are not just inseparable from our nation's history. They have a deep relationship with our multicultural society," Starmer said, pointing out that "millions have family ties to the region".Since the October 7 attack Israel has subjected the Gaza Strip to relentless bombardment. In the last two weeks, the conflict has spread to Israeli attacks...

Inflection point: On the escalation in the multi-party West Asia conflict

Iran’s October 1 ballistic missile attack on Israel marks a serious escalation in the multi-party conflict in West Asia. The attack is not surprising as Iran was under pressure, at home and in the region, from its allies, to respond to repeated Israeli provocations. It was Israel that took the war straight to Iran by attacking the Iranian embassy complex in Damascus, Syria, on April 1. Iran responded with its first direct attack on Israel 14 days later, giving Israel and its allies enough time to prepare for it. Israel’s response was a symbolic, unclaimed strike at a radar system in Isfahan. In end-July, Israel again escalated the conflict by killing Ismail Haniyeh, the political chief of Hamas, in Tehran. Iran vowed retaliation but showed restraint, promising to hold back fire if there wa...

Third front: on the expanding nature of the conflict in West Asia

Sunday’s missile attack on Israel by Yemen’s Houthi rebels marked the second breach of Israel’s highly fortified skies by Houthi weapons in two months, pointing to the expanding nature of the conflict in West Asia. In July, an Iranian-made drone launched by the Houthis from Yemen, roughly 2,000 km south of Israel, had killed one person and wounded 10 others in Tel Aviv. In retaliation, Israel launched an air strike on Hodeida, a Houthi-controlled Red Sea port in Yemen. But that has done little in deterring the Houthis. Israeli authorities have provided conflicting accounts about Sunday’s attack. They first said the missile had landed in central Israel and caused a fire but added later that it had “fragmented mid-air”. Another official said it was intercepted, breaking it into parts but not...
