One of the trademark features of the Indian Premier League in recent years has been the explosive batting on display. With Sunrisers Hyderabad completing a near-impossible chase of 246 against Shreyas Iyer’s Punjab Kings over the weekend, here’s a look at the highest run chases of all time in India’s premier cricket competition.

Punjab Kings (261 runs): This was a nail-biter played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings at the Eden Gardens on April 26, 2024 which has made its mark in the record books as the highest run chase in IPL history. The battle witnessed several blistering knocks in the first innings including from Phil Salt (75 off 37 balls) and Sunil Narine (71 off 32 balls). But then, Jonny Bairstow smashed a match-winning 108 off just 48 balls, complemented by Shashank Singh’s 68 off 28 deliveries to help Punjab chase down the massive total of 261 set by KKR in just 18.4 overs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (246 runs): This is the latest entry in the IPL history books for the most successful run chases. Shreyas Iyer’s Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Pat Cummins’ Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) played an explosive game on April 12, 2025 in Hyderabad. For Punjab, captain Shreyas Iyer top-scored with 82 from 36 balls as they scored 245/6. In response, Hyderabad’s opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head smashed 171 off just 75 balls with their aggressive batting to set the tone. However, even when Head was dismissed at 66 by Yuzvendra Chahal, Abhishek Sharma took the responsibility on his shoulders and smashed 141 off 55. Later Heinrich Klassen and Ishan Kishan finished off the job in 18.3 overs with SRH losing just two wickets.

Rajasthan Royals (226 runs): Rajasthan Royals have two entries to the top 5 list. The first successful chase came against Kings XI Punjab in Sharjah on September 27, 2020. Batting first at Sharjah, Punjab smashed 223/2, thanks to Mayank Agarwal’s blistering ton and KL Rahul’s 69. The opening pair posted 183 runs for the first wicket in 16.2 overs. But Punjab still ended up on the losing side as the RR trio of Steven Smith (50 runs in 27 balls), Sanju Samson (85 in 42) and Rahul Tewatia (53 in 31) chased down the total of 226 with three balls to spare.

Rajasthan Royals (224 runs): Four years after that magnificent night in Sharjah, Rajasthan Royals chased down a target of 224, this time against reigning champions Kolkata Knight Riders. It was Jos Buttler’s unbeaten 107 that paved the road to victory for his side.

Mumbai Indians (219): Five-time champions Mumbai Indians have also left their imprint in the list of top chasers. Rohit Sharma’s squad chased down 219 runs in 20 overs against their biggest rivals CSK in the game. MI, with the help of Kieran Pollard’s stellar performance (unbeaten 87 from 34 balls) on May 01, 2021, secured the thrilling win.
