Police arrest man wanted in Bengal murder, dacoity case

The Mumbai crime branch on Saturday arrested a 34-year-old man wanted in a murder and dacoity case in West Bengal registered last year who was holed up in the city.

A police officer said Unit 1 of the crime branch received information about the man, who was residing in the Ganesh Mandir Road area, Kherwadi of Bandra (east).

Police kept the man under surveillance and on Saturday, the suspect — Rabiul Miah alias Babu (34), a resident of West Bengal, was taken into custody. During interrogation, police said he confessed to have committed a murder and dacoity in West Bengal.

It was revealed that a case had been registered at Bansihari police station on October 14 last year on the charges of murder and dacoity.

A person named Mithun Chakraborty, a local bookie, was murdered. The case involves a total of five accused, out of whom three are still wanted.

Miah had been on the run after the Kolkata High Court rejected his anticipatory bail plea.

According to police, Miah had been absconding since the incident and working as a labourer at a construction site in the Lonavala area for the past two months. On January 1 this year, he came to reside in the Kherwadi area of Mumbai.

The police officer said the West Bengal police have been informed and a team has been dispatched to take custody of the accused.
