New Delhi: Out of power in the national capital for nearly three decades, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a no holds barred attack on incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Wednesday, comparing its leaders to serial killer and fraudster Charles Sobhraj, and also accusing a former CM of Delhi of “spreading lies” about the quality of the Yamuna water.

At a rally in Kartar Nagar, Delhi, Modi said AAP leaders lied with an innocent face. “Friends, their ability to lie is so potent, that you have to work a little harder this time… You must have heard of Charles Sobhraj. He was a well-known fraudster, but such an expert in cheating and duping people that they got trapped every time. That is why it is important to be careful of such people,” the Prime Minister told the crowd at Ghonda Assembly constituency.

Modi asked the people to give him a chance to “serve them”, castigating the AAP for “looting” public money to build a “sheesh mahal”—a reference to former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal’s 6, Flagstaff Road, residence that underwent huge renovations and has come to be the AAP’s Achilles’ heel in the run-up to the 5 February elections.

“Those who built ‘Sheesh Mahal’ and looted crores of public money can never think of welfare or houses for the poor. That’s why these AAPda (a pun on AAP, which means disaster) people are going to Delhi slums and spreading lies,” Modi said.

He reiterated the party’s stand that none of AAP’s ongoing schemes in Delhi would be discontinued if the BJP came to power. “BJP never stops protecting the welfare of the people,” he said.

Modi also took down the AAP leadership for alleging that the BJP government in Haryana had poisoned the water of the Yamuna which Delhi citizens drank.

Kejriwal had Monday claimed that the BJP government in Haryana mixes “poison” in the Yamuna water it supplies to Delhi

Saying this water was drunk by judges, diplomats as well as the poor, Modi added: “A former CM of Delhi has levelled disgusting allegations on the people of Haryana. Due to fear of losing, people from AAPda have got rattled. Are people of Haryana different from those in Delhi? Don’t relatives of those living in Haryana not stay here? Can the people of Haryana poison the water of their own people? The water sent by Haryana is consumed by everyone living in Delhi, which also includes this Prime Minister…”

The Election Commission has given Kejriwal till 8 pm Wednesday to provide evidence supporting his claim that the BJP government in Haryana was “poisoning” Delhi’s water supply.

Modi went on to criticise the AAP government for corruption and promised to table the CAG report in the first session of the Assembly once voted to power.

“For the first time in history, we are seeing a government that ignores an important institution like the CAG (Comptroller and Auditor General of India). The AAP government has hidden the CAG report because they know it will expose them,” Modi alleged.
