Low pressure area over Bay of Bengal becomes well-marked low pressure area

The low pressure area over southeast Bay of Bengal and adjoining east Equatorial Indian Ocean moved to become a well-marked low pressure area over the southwest and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday (December 10, 2024). 

According to the Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai, the associated upper air cyclonic circulation extends up to mid-tropospheric levels. The system is very likely to continue to move west-northwestwards towards Sri Lanka-Tamil Nadu coasts in the next 24 hours.

On Tuesday, heavy rain is likely at one or two places over Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur districts of Tamil Nadu as well as the Karaikal area. On Wednesday (December 11, 2024), light to moderate rain is likely to occur at many places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with thunderstorm and lightning at one or two places.

While heavy to very heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai, Nagapattinam, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, and Pudukkottai districts, and the Karaikal area, heavy rain is predicted at isolated places over Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram, Tiruchi, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Kallakurichi, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Chennai, and Tiruvallur districts, and Puducherry. 

On Thursday (December 12, 2024), light to moderate rain is likely to occur at many places over north Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, with thunderstorm and lighting at one or two places. Heavy to very heavy rain is likely at isolated places over Thanjavur, Sivagangai, Pudukkottai, and Tiruchi districts.

Heavy rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore, Ariyalur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Theni, Madurai, Ramanathapuram, Karur, Perambalur, Thoothukudi, and Dindigul districts, as well as Puducherry and Karaikal.
