Quake and Indian aid

India is well known for extending humanitarian assistance to crisis-ridden nations (Page 1, “‘Operation Brahma’ kicks off; PM Modi reaches out to junta”, March 30).

One hopes that the laudable gesture by India brings quick relief to the quake-affected country.

Earthquakes, unpredictable and often catastrophic, remind us of the necessity to be adequately prepared. It is imperative that educational initiatives be implemented at various levels, starting from schools and extending to workplaces and community centres. Local authorities, along with community leaders and organisations, play a pivotal role in spearheading these efforts. They should ensure that resources, training, and educational materials are readily accessible to all.

Investigate further

The recent case of the discovery of burnt currency notes from the premises of the residence of a senior judge in the Delhi High has caused considerable consternation and speculation throughout the country. But what is intriguing is how so much of money could be found in the store room adjacent to the judge’s bungalow. In the first place, it is astonishing how the judge who was not high in terms of seniority in the Allahabad High Court was transferred to the Delhi High Court as one of the seniormost judges. The judge may now have been transferred to Allahabad, but that does not answer the question.

Many have long questioned the collegium being a substitute for the earlier mode of selection and whether it is better than the National Judicial Appointments Commission. The suspicion that surrounds this material question has led to several questions being raised. Therefore, an in-depth inquiry is necessary not only to find out whether the judge concerned has anything to do with the money found but also with regard to his initial transfer. Unless such an inquiry is held, merely confining to the issue of money being found may not serve the purpose of having a judiciary that is impeccably honest.
