Mumbai Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene remained tight-lipped over the likely return of pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, who has been out of action ever since breaking down while leading India in the New Year’s Test in Australia.
“Obviously, Jasprit is at the moment with the NCA. He has just started that progress. We have to wait and see what their feedback on him. At the moment, everything is going well but obviously, it is on a day-to-day basis,” Jayawardene said on Wednesday about the pacer who is at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru, during Mumbai Indians’ pre-season media interaction ahead of the Indian Premier League’s 2025 season.

“He is in good spirits and hopefully, he can join the team sooner. Obviously, not having him is a challenge. He is one of the best bowlers in the world and he has been a fantastic pro for us for many years. We will have to find a way, it is an opportunity for someone else also to step up and show what they are capable of.”
Ever since breaking down with a back problem, Bumrah has been out of action. It will be interesting to see how he paces his comeback, with India set to tour England for five Tests soon after the IPL final on May 25.
Bumrah’s absence will mean Trent Boult’s return to the golden blue will be even more critical to end MI’s four-year title drought. Boult will lead a new-look bowling group, which will also include the likes of Mitchell Santner and Deepak Chahar.

“The plan was very clear, you get a lot of experience in the bowling group because Wankhede can be sometimes very unforgiving to the bowlers,” captain Hardik Pandya said.
“It was very important to bring in experience who have played from Mitch to Trent. Trent was very, very important for us (in 2020).
