India Register First Win Of Women’s T20 World Cup 2024

From then on, India bowlers did not let Pakistan batters get any upper hand as the Women in Blue eventually restricted the opposition for a meager score of 105-8 in 20 overs.

In response, India batters too faced a rocky start as they lost Smriti Mandhana in the fifth over. However, Shafali Verma and Jemimah Rodrigues joined hands to muster up a good partnership, ensuring India were well on track to register their first victory of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024.

Pakistan bowlers appeared to be soaring back into the game as they clinched three quick wickets to reduce India to 84-4 in 16 overs but Harmanpreet Kaur and Deepti Sharma made sure that India did not lose anymore wickets.  Just as India were on the cusp of victory, Harmanpreet retired hurt as she picked up a neck injury losing ballance on the crease. Eventually, India won the match by 6 wickets to make sure they were no more the bottom-placed team on the Group A points table. India with two points in two matches with the Net Run Rate (NRR) of -1.217 stand fourth in the Group A standings.

Here’s What The Two Captains Said During Post-Match Presentation Ceremony

Fatima Sana (Pakistan Captain):

“We were not up to the mark in batting and that is why we were 10-15 runs short. Hopefully we will do well in the batting order from the next match. I will try to go up in the order. I’m enjoying my time with these girls. I have enjoyed my time playing against India.”

Smriti Mandhana (India Women Vice-Captain):

“I think its too soon to say anything, our medical team is working on her so lets see how it goes. Well, I think as a bowling unit, we did really well, followed the plans and executed it nicely. As a fielding unit, we have to improve a little bit but happy to get our first win. Yeah definitely we did think about it but me and Shafali were unable to time the ball nicely so we tried to be calculative in order to ensure we don’t lose too many wickets and put pressure on ourselves, so we wanted to get over the line comfortably.”

“Yeah definitely, they are playing really good cricket. For us, this game will get a lot of momentum for us going into the World Cup, so hopefully we keep doing our process right.”
