A man was captured on video jumping from the elevated Mayur Vihar 1 Metro station, on to the road below, on Monday afternoon. The man, whom the police identified as Vikram Sharma (45) — a resident of Katwaria Sarai, who works in a Gurgaon-based private telecommunications company – has been hospitalised.

The video, which has been shared widely on social media, shows Sharma climbing down the platform’s guardrails and scaling the wall below before leaping towards the road below. The police said they received a call from the station controller saying that a man was hanging over the platform’s side in the station for about half an hour.

Personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Police Control Room and Fire Brigade tried to rescue Sharma with a hydraulic crane, police said. “The CISF personnel also tried to rescue him with the help of ropes. A lot of effort was made to save the man and convince him not to jump, but he did not listen,” an officer said.

After he jumped, Sharma was taken to Lal Bahadur Shastri hospital, said Delhi Metro officials. He was later shifted to Guru Tegh Bahadur hospital for further treatment.

“A cellphone, a paper with contact numbers written on it, some cash and a Metro card were found on him,” the officer said, adding his family has been informed of the incident. The motive behind Sharma’s actions is being investigated, police said.
