A 30-year-old man has been apprehended from the Shakarpur area of Delhi for allegedly using spy cameras hidden in bulb-holders to secretly record a woman tenant in her bathroom and bedroom, police said.

As per a report in NDTV, the woman is preparing for civil services entrance exams and lives alone in the rented property in Shakarpur. The accused, Karan, is the landlord’s son and resides on a different floor in the same building. The cameras were allegedly placed on the premises when she left her keys with Karan while on a visit to her hometown in Uttar Pradesh.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (East) Apoorva Gupta said the woman filed a complaint after noticing suspicious activity on her WhatsApp account. Upon checking linked devices, she discovered an unfamiliar laptop. This raised her suspicions, leading her to search her apartment, where she found a camera hidden in the bulb-holder of her bathroom. She immediately contacted police.

“She found one camera installed in the bulb-holder of her bathroom and alerted the police by making a PCR call,” the senior officer said. The officer said when a sub-inspector reached the woman’s place and searched it again, another camera was found installed in the bulb-holder of her bedroom.

Police Seize Two Laptops

When the woman was asked if someone else had access to her home, she said she often left the keys with Karan.

During questioning, Karan admitted to installing the cameras three months ago, when the woman left for her hometown. “Seizing this opportunity, Karan purchased three spy cameras commonly available in electronics markets and installed one in her bedroom and one in her bathroom,” the police officer added.

As the cameras were not capable of online operation, and the footage was stored on memory cards, Karan repeatedly asked the woman for her keys, claiming he needed to carry out electrical repairs in her room, so he could transfer the recorded videos to his laptop.

During the investigation, police seized two laptops used to store the footage. The 30-year-old accused has been booked for voyeurism under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which carries a minimum jail term of one year. The investigation is still underway.
