The Delhi High Court on Thursday sought a response from the city government on the presence of illegal dog breeders in the Capital.

The court was hearing a petition seeking control of illegal dog breeding centres in the city. The plea has been pending for the past six years.

It also asked the city government to file a status report on the proposed action against illegal pet shop owners.

During the hearing, the government counsel told the court that an exercise for the registration of pet shop owners was being undertaken and would be completed within 90 days.

It will be ensured that pet shop owners comply with the rules and necessary action will be taken for violation, the counsel submitted.

The court will hear the case again on May 7, 2025.

In the previous hearing, the court hit out at the city government’s animal husbandry department for failing to check for illegal dog breeding. It underlined that cases of dog bites are rising in the city.
