West Bengal Leader of Opposition and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari claimed that at least 100 crore Hindu-owned properties had been damaged during religious clashes that turned violent in Murshidabad.

He suggested that Bangladeshi outfit ‘Ansarulla Bangla Jamat’ was behind the violence, while TMC leader Kunal Ghosh said, “Those who instigated the violence, local people did not recognise them. They came from outside. Who are they? Where did they come from? Who helped them? We think there is a bigger conspiracy. We are demanding a detailed investigation.”

“We have already made a list of six hundred persons who instigated the violence and submitted it to the administration,” Adhikari said in front of the legislative Assembly on Monday.

He also alleged that TMC Minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury was one of the instigators: “Siddiqullah Chowdhury said they will first set fire in the district, then in Kolkata.”

However, Chowdhury denied the LoP’s allegation. He said, “We have no organisation in Jangipur and I last went to Jangipur during the Lok Sabha elections. If he does not stop such allegations, I will press defamation charges against him.”

Violence erupted in Murshidabad over anti-Waqf Bill protests last week. Samsergunj, Dhulian, Suti, Jangipur and some other areas of Murshidabad were affected. Three persons died, and many properties were ransacked or damaged.

He further added, “In Murshidabad, hooligans damaged and looted properties like what happened in Bangladesh. We will not allow ‘Ansarulla Bangla Jamat’ in Murshidabad. We will fight against that and will go to any extent.”

Adhikari is hopeful that the situation “will soon be peaceful”. He said, “Don’t worry. The situation will be under control and peaceful very soon. Paramilitary forces have already been deployed after the High Court’s order and they will tackle the situation.”
