Letters to The Editor — November 4, 2024

Canada versus IndiaCanada does not seem to be stopping its torrent of allegations against India, given the new bombshell directed against the Union Home Minister, Amit Shah (Page 1, “Canada’s ‘absurd’ charges will have consequences: India”, November 3). India should counter Canada effectively with solid and credible evidence. Merely refuting Ottawa’s accusations and taking soft diplomatic initiatives will not wipe out the harm that has already been caused to the image and the reputation of the country. India is virtually isolated on this sensitive issue, with the western countries taking a clear stand and siding with Canada. It is for India to prevail upon Canada, through appropriate global forums to share substantive proof that would ‘implicate’ India in the sordid episode. Else, ...

Revenue repercussions: on GST revenue trends

Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue trends have been considerably wobbly this financial year, even as three of its seven months so far have recorded among the highest collections from the indirect tax. While the year started with a bang as April clocked the first ever instance of revenues of over ₹2 lakh crore, with gross and net receipts rising 12.4% and 15.5%, respectively, bolstered by year-end filings, July’s gross receipts were the third highest (at the time) at over ₹1.82 lakh crore, up 10.3%. October’s GST receipts prior to refunds, released on Friday, were the second highest in the seven-odd years of the tax. But these spikes have been punctuated by underwhelming numbers. Growth in gross revenues had hit a three-year low of 7.3% in June, and worsened to a 40-month low of 6.5% in S...

Airports where pilots could fear to land

On October 25, 2024, there was an incident involving a Qatar Airways Boeing 787 that was operating as a scheduled flight from Colombo, Sri Lanka to Doha, Qatar. After landing and taxiing at slow speed to the assigned bay, the plane’s right main landing gear sank into a ramp area, which in turn collapsed. As the plane’s main landing gear wheels had sunk in deep, the right engine made contact with the ground and sustained damage. It is fortunate that the incident did not happen on the runway or on the taxi track when the plane would have been at a higher speed. Social media posts indicate that a Japanese company contracted to build the airport at Doha — most of it is on reclaimed land — had suggested that the whole area would need to be concreted as the soil was not strong enough to hand...

Freebies and a financial crisis

Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy Soon after Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge urged party State units to only make promises that were financially viable, Prime Minister Narendra Modi attacked the Congress saying it made “unreal promises” during election campaigns but realised only later that implementing them was tough or impossible. It was evident that Telangana, the only State where the Congress won Assembly elections in the last one year, was the target of Mr. Modi’s remarks. One reason for the Congress’s victory in the 2023 Assembly elections was the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS)’s arrogance. Another major reason was the party’s grand promises to the people. Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy reacted sharply to Mr. Modi’s comm...

Sharing resources: on fishermen and the Palk Bay dispute

India rightly used the sixth meeting of the India-Sri Lanka Joint Working Group on Fisheries, in Colombo on October 29, as an opportunity to again call for a meeting between fishermen of both countries to resolve the vexed problem of fishing in the Palk Bay. In a meeting in Colombo between India’s High Commissioner Santosh Jha and Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, stress was laid on the “importance of a long-term resolution that respects the needs of fishermen ... and promotes cooperation”. Mr. Dissanayake affirmed his commitment to protecting Sri Lanka’s interests. Weeks earlier, when India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met the President, the subject had come up for discussion. The idea of talks between fishermen seems to have takers. On October 25, fishermen stag...
