U.K. elections 2024: Eric Sukumaran, a Tory candidate with ties to Kerala

Eric Sukumaran is the Conservative Party candidate for the Southgate and Wood Green parliamentary constituency in London. He is the U.K.-born son of immigrants from Kerala. Mr. Sukumaran spent holidays, over three decades, in Kerala, and speaks Malayalam. Why the Conservative Party? And why now, when it’s potentially facing a defeat of historic proportions? Well, I think the second one first, I don’t think your principles should be decided on whether the party is going to win or lose. I’m a conservative because I’m a conservative and I’m not chasing the party that’s up or the party that’s down. I take this long view on history that these things are cyclical, regardless. Why am I a conservative? I’m a conservative because we’re the one party that really values individual freedom over th...

Rishi Sunak 2.0 Or Return Of Labour? UK Votes In Historic Polls Today

Britain's political leaders made a final frantic push for votes Wednesday on the last day of an election campaign expected to return a Labour government after 14 years of Conservative rule. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak insisted he was still "fighting hard" despite one of his closest allies conceding that the Tories were heading for an "extraordinary landslide" defeat on Thursday. The Conservatives suffered a further blow at the 11th hour when The Sun tabloid, famous for backing election winners, endorsed Keir Starmer's Labour. Polls overwhelmingly predict that Labour will win its first general election since 2005 -- making Starmer the party's first prime minister since Gordon Brown left office in 2010. That outcome would see Britain swing leftwards back to the centre ground after almost a de...

“A Nobody Like Me…”: After Manipur Congress MP’s Parliament Speech, BJP’s “Core Issues” Jab

Ten minutes before midnight on Monday, Manipur groups and channels on social media buzzed with messages with a link to Sansad TV's YouTube channel - "oja wa ngag doure (professor is about to speak)". They had been expecting Manipur Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam to speak for the first time in parliament - actually, any MP from the state to speak in the house after a long, long time. Mr Akoijam, who teaches at the Centre for the Study of Social Systems in Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University, found his turn at last after a day of high-decibel exchanges between the ruling National Democratic Alliance leaders and the Opposition. "Keep your hands on your heart and think about the 60,000 people who are languishing in relief camps, and those mothers, those widows, think of them and then you t...
