Meta To End Ban On Word ‘Martyr’ After Year-Long Review

Meta Platforms said on Tuesday it would lift its blanket ban on the word "shaheed", or "martyr" in English, after a year-long review by its oversight board found the social media giant's approach was "overbroad". The company has been criticized for years over its handling of content involving the Middle East, including in a 2021 study Meta itself commissioned that found its approach had an "adverse human rights impact" on Palestinians and other Arabic-speaking users of its services. Those criticisms have escalated since the onset of hostilities between Israel and Hamas in October. The oversight board, which is funded by Meta but operates independently, started its review last year because the word accounted for more content removals on the company's platforms than any other single word or ...

“Daughter Missing, She Can’t Speak”: UP Stampede Survivors Look For Family

Hathras in Uttar Pradesh, which made headlines  a few years ago for the horrific rape and murder of a Dalit woman, has been in the news again. This time for a stampede at a religious programme that has cost 116 lives. The tragedy is still unfolding and many of the devotees are desperately looking for lost family and friends. Suresh, a survivor of the stampede, told reporters, "I came here with my family from Badaun. My brother's wife is missing. We got to know that several people are missing. I made announcements in the mic but it did not help". Among those missing is a 15-year-old named Chaya, whose family came to participate in the satsang from Agra. "I have been looking all over for her. My daughter cannot speak. She can only cry," said her anguished mother. "There were six to seven peo...

“Government Working On War Footing To Curb Paper Leaks”: PM In Lok Sabha

Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the Lok Sabha on Tuesday that the government is working on a war footing to curb incidents of paper leaks, while asserting that those playing with the future of youngsters will not be spared. The prime minister's comments came amid a raging row over alleged irregularities, including paper leaks, in competitive examinations such as the NEET and the NET. The opposition has been demanding a discussion on the issue in Parliament. Replying to a two-day debate on the Motion of Thanks to the president's address to a joint sitting of Parliament, PM Modi said arrests are being made across the country in connection with the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) issue. "The president expressed concerns about paper leaks in her address. I also want to tell stu...

Jasprit Bumrah a wizard at work

Like a stalled racehorse waiting for the gates to open, he waits for the batter to settle into his stance. The unconscious twitching of the shoulders already out of the way, he gathers himself for a microsecond, then sets off on a brisk walk with the ball held above his head in both hands. After a few quick steps, he gathers momentum, exploding at the bowling crease with a hyperextended right elbow, a braced left knee. The orb that leaves his hand is now a weapon of destruction. It could shape in in the air, break away on pitching and hit top of off, like Reeza Hendricks found out. It could defy physics and tail in late, as Marco Jansen discovered to his utter shock. It can also begin way outside off and keep coming in, homing in on toes and stumps as if radar-directed. Skeptical? Ask Ol...

“Parasite”, “Khatakhat Diwas”: PM Hits Back Amid Protests In Lok Sabha

The Opposition is back in strength in parliament, determined to make themselves heard. And they chose to do it today, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi rose to respond to the Motion of Thanks for the President's address. The result was a furious din that came close to the BJP protests of 2004, which stopped then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from introducing his Council of Ministers. PM Modi, though, laboured on through the uproar for over two hours, once it became clear that the Opposition would not relent.   The ostensible reason for the Opposition protests was that the PM's speech came as a representative from Manipur was abruptly cut off. The Opposition has always maintained that the Prime Minister had neglected the violence-hit state, not just failing to visit but also remaining silen...

Hurricane Beryl was hurtling towards Jamaica Tuesday as a monster Category 5 storm, after killing at least five people and causing widespread destruction in a deadly sweep across the southeastern Caribbean. Though expected to weaken slightly later Tuesday, the hurricane is still on track to slam into Jamaica on Wednesday as a "near-major" storm, bringing life-threatening winds, storm surge, rain and flash flooding, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) warned.
