Experts Blame Bad Preparation, Exhaustion For Biden’s Debate Performance

President Joe Biden's train-wreck debate with Republican opponent Donald Trump followed a series of decisions by his most senior advisers that critics now point to as wrong-headed, interviews with Democratic allies, donors and former and current aides show.   Trump, 78, repeated a series of well-worn, glaring falsehoods during the 90-minute debate on Thursday, including claims that he actually won the 2020 election. Biden, 81, failed to refute them and his fumbling, halting performance has sparked calls from Democrats for him to end his quest for a second term and for "soul-searching" or resignations among top aides.  "My only request was make sure he's rested before the debate, but he was exhausted. He was unwell," said one person who said they appealed to Biden's top aides in the days be...

3-Way Run-Offs And Horse-Trading: What Happens Next In French Elections

Here's how the second round of France's parliamentary election on July 7 will work and the possible scenarios after exit polls showed Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally (RN) party had won Sunday's first round. HOW DOES IT WORK? Elections for the 577 seats in France's National Assembly are a two-round process. In constituencies where no candidate won outright in the first round, the top two candidates, as well as any candidate with more than 12.5% of the total number of registered voters in that constituency, move to a second round. Whoever gets the most votes in the second round wins the seat. The high turnout on Sunday means some 300 constituencies are now facing potential three-way run-offs which, in theory, favour the RN. To prevent these three-way run-offs and block the RN, Franc...

Jill Biden’s dress makes a post-debate statement – Times of India

As Prez Joe Biden attempted to address some of the concerns about his age and energy on Friday, his wife Jill, a political spouse who often seems to choose clothes that recede into the background, took her place by his side in a navy-blue crepe dress plastered with one word over and over again: "Vote". Given the many post-debate reactions focused on viewers' anxious feelings, it could not have been a coincidence. This is the third time in the past four years that the first lady has worn a garment with a message written on it. In 2020, before the last presidential election, she wore a pair of knee-high boots that also read "vote." And in 2021, at the first G7 meeting in Britain after the prez took office, she wore a jacket with the word "love" on the back. The choice was widely interpret...

Court on climate right and how India can enforce it

Through its recent judgment in M.K. Ranjitsinh and Ors. vs Union of India & Ors., the Supreme Court of India has dropped a large rock into the relatively placid waters of India’s nascent climate change jurisprudence. It has read into the Constitution of India the right to ‘be free from the adverse effects of climate change’, identifying both the right to life and the right to equality as its sources. As a new government considers its imperatives and agenda, Ranjitsinh provides an intriguing opportunity to think through and possibly enact much more systematic governance around climate change. A new right around climate Scholars and legal practitioners are still unpacking the judgment. The issue before the Court was whether and how electricity transmission lines can be built through t...

Respite may still elude a beleaguered community

At an election rally, in New Delhi | Photo Credit: PTI In November 1888, Lord Dufferin (1826-1902) wrote, ‘Muslims of British India, a nation of 50 million reigned supreme from the Himalayas to Cape Comorin’. In contemporary India, the Muslim demographic has swelled to more than fourfold since Lord Dufferin’s era. It now surpasses the combined populations of Britain and France. Despite this, Indian Muslims find themselves standing helplessly at the heart of a violent triangle marked by lynching, bulldozer justice, and riots under the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) regime, particularly since 2014. Notably, a majority of Muslims have collectively exhaled in relief at the outcome of the 2024 general election. The BJP has been deprived of a majority of its own, a departure from the verdicts ...

The rot in India’s higher education system

Image for representation. File | Photo Credit: PTI The academic year of 2022-23 was marked by unprecedented delays in admissions to all university programmes because of the introduction of the National Testing Agency (NTA)-run Common University Entrance Test (CUET) regime for both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. Initially, a CUET for PhD admissions had also been envisaged by the NTA for 2022-23, but that plan was summarily dropped in mid-September 2022. University administrations that had disregarded the serious internal critique by teachers and students of the blind ceding of this core aspect of university autonomy were left in the lurch. One such university was Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) whose tryst with the NTA is indicative of all that Central universities have suffer...
