20-year-old college student dies by suicide in Mumbai’s Dadar; police recover her diary

A 20-year-old college student allegedly ended her life in a 14-storey building in Dadar late on Tuesday, police said, adding that as per their primary investigation, she had been depressed since male friend rejected her proposal.

The police said the woman was a BCom student of a South Mumbai college who lived with her parents. Her father is a businessman.

An officer said that the woman had been in love with a male friend for some time. “Recently, she went and told him about her feelings, but as he did not feel the same way, he turned down her proposal by saying that he saw her just as a friend,” the officer said.

Subsequently, the woman learnt that he was in love with another woman, which left her disappointed and led to her slipping into depression, the police said.

On Tuesday, her two male friends visited her to console her and it was in their presence the woman killed herself, around 9.30 pm, her father told the police. Alerted by the friends, her parents rushed the woman to a hospital, where she was declared dead on arrival.

A police officer said, “The two boys are in shock, which is why we have managed to record the statement of only one of them, who provided us with these details.”

The Matunga police, which filed an accidental death report, have also recovered from the woman’s home a diary that gave hints about her thoughts.
