Don’t mind being on pitches like this as long as everyone keeps their mouth shut in India and no-one is talking about pitches there: Rohit Sharma on Newlands wicket

India skipper Rohit Sharma called for a fair review of Indian pitches which more often than not receive criticism as compared to the pitches of other countries. This comment came from Sharma after the Newlands Test ended in one and a half days with 33 wickets falling and India walking away with a historic victory which levelled the series 1-1. “I don’t mind being on pitches like this as long as everyone keeps their mouth shut in India and no-one is talking about the pitches there,” Rohit said on Thursday after the match. “Yes it is dangerous, but you come here (South Africa) to challenge yourself and you must face up to it,” he added. Sharma also called out the match referees and pointed out there’s inconsistency in the way the officials rate pitches in different countries. 𝘼 𝙘𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙠𝙚𝙧 ...

When Rohit Sharma told teammates he’s going to play the role of aggressor at the World Cup

The idea of him ditching self-preservation for the high-risk, high-reward approach at the top of the order for the World Cup was proposed by the Indian captain Rohit Sharma himself during a team meeting after the Asia Cup earlier this year. It is learnt that Rohit wanted to put bowling attacks to the sword as far back as last year’s T20 World Cup in Australia, but it didn’t come off. During the 50-over World Cup at home, on pitches more conducive to hitting on the up, Rohit felt it was a risk worth taking. Rohit told his teammates and the coaching staff that as captain he would set the tone of the innings and this would allow others to play their natural game. The bold proposal of the skipper came with a rider: If the plan didn’t work out, he would be willing to play more conservatively...

Self-made captain Rohit Sharma opens up: ‘Whatever I have created today, it’s because of myself… I didn’t expect anything from anyone’

Rohit Sharma is about 11 years old, staring angrily at a group of boys. Behind him, a couple of his teammates have fled. Rohit hears their panicked departure, but stands his ground, still angry at the opponents for brazenly cheating during their cricket game.“I remember saying it isn’t fair what you guys did.” Outnumbered, he was whacked. “At that time, I would do a lot of maara-maari over this and that.” But he was “scared” to go home with a bruised face. “What will my uncles and grandparents say?” Next day, one of his uncles went head-hunting. “He got hold of each one of them, and we gave it back!” Rohit laughs now. “It was important to let everyone know that you can’t cheat and fight like that na, bhai!” Rohit is just days away from his greatest challenge of leading India in a World ...

Ahead of World Cup, Rohit Sharma adopting new avatar to give India quicker starts

Rohit Sharma’s 85-ball 101 during India’s 90-run victory over New Zealand on Tuesday ended a long-awaited drought of centuries, going back three years. In that time, though, his stats suggest he has made a key change to his approach at the top of the innings. With the 2023 World Cup on the horizon, the Indian captain is trying to transform himself into an aggressive opener and give India the kind of quick-fire starts that Virender Sehwag gave during the 2011 World Cup. The former opener scored 380 runs from seven games at an average of 47.50 and a blistering strike rate of 122.50 in the tournament. Prior to Tuesday, since his last 100, Rohit had been averaging 39.61 from 15 innings at a strike rate of 103.62, giving his side quick starts with the bat, going after the bowlers right from ...
