Dementia risk depends on more than lifestyle factors — overstating this can cause stigma, blame

As public awareness of dementia grows, so too does the appetite for prevention. Global headlines tout the benefits of exercise, diet, brain training and social activity in reducing dementia risk. In recent years, medical journals have amplified this message to encourage people to take control of their cognitive futures through lifestyle change. Last year, The Lancet estimated up to 45% of dementia cases worldwide could theoretically be delayed or prevented by addressing modifiable risk factors. These messages are undeniably hopeful. They suggest personal effort, combined with emerging scientific evidence, can help to overcome a disease long seen as inevitable. But public health messaging that focuses too narrowly on behaviour may be misleading and potentially harmful, as we argue in The La...

Can vitamin D help prevent colorectal cancer? The science is promising – but not straightforward

The potential role of vitamin D in preventing and treating colorectal cancer (CRC) has attracted growing research interest – especially as CRC rates are rising, particularly among younger adults. This isn’t a new area of study. Low vitamin D levels have long been linked to a higher risk of developing colorectal cancer. One large study involving over 12,000 participants found that people with low blood levels of vitamin D had a 31% greater risk of developing CRC compared to those with higher levels. Similarly, another study reported a 25% lower CRC risk among individuals with high dietary vitamin D intake. Data from the Nurses’ Health Study – a long-term investigation of American nurses – showed that women with the highest vitamin D intake had a 58% lower risk of developing colorectal cancer...

She then sat for makeup for the event. “However, by then, the solution in the lens box had become an acid. However, I had to attend the event because it was a professional commit...

After reporting hair loss, Buldhana’s Shegaon residents are suddenly losing nails; here are ways to reverse it

Following an alarming trend of sudden hair loss, Shegaon in Maharashtra’s Buldhana district is again in the news for yet another health issue – shedding of nails. According to a recent PTI report, nearly 30 individuals in Shegaon have been reported with nail deformities, which may be linked to high selenium levels in their blood. Shegaon had made national headlines in December 2024 and early January this year, following complaints of people experiencing sudden baldness and hair loss, also due to an alleged link between high selenium content in wheat distributed through ration stores. However, the claims remained unconfirmed, with several experts disagreeing. “Twenty-nine persons have been found with nail deformities in four villages in Shegaon taluka. In some cases, the nails have fallen o...

Myth or fact: Those who walk fast are at a lower risk of diabetes

Type 2 diabetes is understood to stem from an abnormal balance of insulin inside the body. “This is probably because either the body mechanism has become resistant to insulin, or because it does not produce adequate amounts of the substance to maintain blood sugar control,” said Shikha Singh, nutritionist and fitness expert, Shiksfitness. A sedentary lifestyle is one of the key contributors to this condition. Limited physical activity or movement contributes to visceral fat deposited around internal organs, mostly in the abdominal region; it interferes with insulin action and impairs its proper working. Therefore, Singh noted that fast walkers have a far lesser chance of developing diabetes, making regular brisk walking one of the most effective and simple preventive measures. “A systemati...
