Thane-Bhayandar mega projects: Days after scrapping tenders, MMRDA seeks details of L&T’s ‘Rs 3,000 crore lower’ bid

Days after scrapping two tenders worth Rs 14,000 crore for the Thane-Ghodbunder to Bhayandar tunnel and elevated road projects in the “larger public interest”, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has asked Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Ltd to provide detailed financial estimates which were part of its bid.This comes after L&T disclosed before the Supreme Court that its price bid was over Rs 3,000 crore lower than the lowest bidder declared by MMRDA. The L&T had claimed before the SC that compared to Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Ltd (MEIL) which was declared as the lowest bidder for both the projects, its price bid was almost Rs 2,521 crore less in case of the tunnel project, and Rs 609 crore less for the elevated road project. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is set to scrap 11 construction contracts worth Rs 26,300 crore that were awarded by the Eknath Shinde government to seven civil engineering firms for constructing the first phase, totaling 96.47 km, of the ambitious 126-km Virar–Alibaug Multi-Modal Corridor (VAMMC) project. While the earlier tenders were awarded under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model, the government is now contemplating floating fresh tenders to build the entire project under the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model. MMRDA triples its non-fare revenue to Rs 122 crore through strategic efforts

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has almost tripled its non-fare box revenue (NFBR) – income generated from sources other than passenger fares – to Rs 122 crore in FY 2024-25 from Rs 42.5 crore the previous year. According to MMRDA, the 187 per cent hike indicates a healthy move towards developing a financially sustainable and commuter-centric metro rail system in Mumbai. The total operating revenue, comprising fare and non-fare revenue, increased from Rs 190 crore during FY 2023–24 to Rs 292 crore this fiscal, well above the Rs 200-crore target set at the start of the fiscal. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) began trial runs on the Mandale-Mankhurd stretch of Metro Line 2B on Wednesday, with the first test run conducted by running a train carrying MMRDA staff and workers to assess operational readiness. This first phase, which is part of the 5.39-kilometre Phase I, serves five stations–Mandale, Mankhurd, BSNL, Shivaji Chowk and Diamond Garden. Even though the testing was conducted on Mandale-Diamond Garden section, the whole Yellow Line 2B is of 23.6-km from Mandale to DN Nagar in Andheri with 20 stations.
