Making her first visit to Murshidabad since communal violence erupted in the region, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday mounted a scathing attack on the BJP-led central government, accusing it of engineering unrest through divisive politics and “pre-planned” provocation.
The violence in Murshidabad followed the passage of the amended Waqf Bill in April, which mandates the inclusion of non-Muslim members on Waqf boards and requires Muslim donors to certify their religious affiliation for the previous five years. The Bill sparked heated exchanges in Parliament, with opposition parties warning that it could erode minority rights.
